

It was INCREDIBLE! The rest of the museum was good too (a great example of modern gallery design), but hadn't changed since the last time we were there, so we high-tailed it downstairs to the main event.
Apparently Walt found Kley's work when he was in Europe, and bought a ton of it. There were a dozen or two small pieces (you can see the wrinkles in the page from the gouache, it's so cool!), and several sketchbooks. The museum had even reproduced two full sketchbooks for guests to flip through, which is where most of these sketches come from.
It was amazing, seeing this work inches away from my face (just as awesome as seeing an actual Bouguereau at the CA Palace of the Legion of Honour, later that day), and seeing stuff that had apparently been in a vault for the last 5+ decades.
Not to be missed if you can get out to SF before Sept 16 - Bring your sketchbook!
