Night settled over the woods like a blanket, covering everything in its darkness, the only light glimpses of the stars through the trees overhead. In a clearing below was a lone fire, only big enough to cook an ear of corn or spitroast a large rat. Sparks flew from the flames, creating a light show, the only watcher a lone adventurer. He sat close enough to the fire to feel its warmth, but far enough so his face was covered in shadows. He had hair down to his tail, and a tail fluffy as a rabbit, matching his hair in length.
Next to him sat a small tent, large enough for only one body to sleep inside. Without warning a soft moan came from the tent, alerting the fire watcher that his tenant seemed to have woken up. He stood, opened the flaps of the tent and peeked inside. Blankets and furs were twisted around the male's body, soaked in sweat from his fever. Finally though, it seemed he had broken it and woken up.
"How're you feeling big guy? I'm Bane. Bane Silverheart," commented the long haired canine as he studied the dazed wolf inside the tent. His gaze was returned by fiery eyes as they looked upon him with confusion. The wolf sat up, pushing aside the soaked blankets, revealing a body naked save for a rough leather loin cloth and bandages. This, too, was soaked all the way through.
"Where am I? How did I get here?" questioned the wolf, body still too weak to try and make a move or attempt an escape. It took all his strength to even sit up like this.
"Woah, calm down there, big guy," Bane said, now sitting in the entrance of the tent. "I saved you from this big monster you were fighting. I was traveling through the woods when I heard the cries of an injured animal and it led me straight into your fight. That thing, I don't know what in the world it was, but it was big. And those teeth...it looked as if one of them had gone right through you, what with that big hole in your arm." Bane pointed to a bandage wrapped around the wolf's arm where the wound had been.
"Somehow I managed to fight the thing off; you were lying on the ground, barely breathing when I got back to you. I had enough herbs on me to make a few potions. They barely saved your life, but you pulled through. Had a nasty fever though. Your markings, those flames...are you from a clan?"
All the questions were making the wolf's head spin. He had just woken up from a life threatening fever, he didn't need this kind of stress. All it seemed he could remember right now was his name, and that was faded to him.
"Luke...Luke Firetail. The monster...I was fighting it for a purpose, though right now I cannot remember why. Perhaps when I get some rest, I can tell you more. I thank you for saving my life, adventurer."
"Ah, it's no problem. Always willing to help a fellow adventurer in need. So Luke of no clan, would you care to join me? I've always wanted to know what it was like to travel in a party rather than by myself, and this seems like a prime opportunity. Seeing as you can't really remmeber anything and can't really defend yourself right now, I'm sure you could use the company as well. So, whaddya say?"
It seemed Luke had no choice in the matter. He was too weak to try and defend himself, and no memory would get him nowhere. So, his decision was made.
"I shall travel with you, fellow adventurer, though only until my memories return and I know my purpose. Then, I will find my own way home."
