(checks) Ah, the U.N. Convention on Road Signs and Signals specifies either English, the local language, or both. I guess they figure since it's so visually distinctive, they don't need to use a separate German word... especially since "stop" is originally German. (It didn't originally mean the same thing as "helten", however. It was a synonym of "plug" or "obstruct".)
