Continuing my (September, 2012) 'sweeps month', I have another classic cover from a back issue of "Brow-Beat", illustrated by Lya Korda (who passed away one year ago this month).
This time, I'm going way back - over thirty years - to September, 1981. I was in my late 20s at the time, and Lya (herself) was in her early 60s when she'd rendered the cover art for this issue of "Brow-Beat" (the official journal of Broward County MENSA). Appropriately enough, the owls (the group's mascots) were heading for school - with the usual stuff that students bring with them (pens and pencils, books, a lunchbox, and [of course] an apple for the teacher).
Oddly enough, today's Broward County students began their school year in August, with iPods, cell phones, and texting devices amongst the usual paraphernalia they brought to school. Lya's owls (from three decades ago) remind me of a much simpler time, when the new semester began. Those of you 40 years of age (and older) might agree with me...
