I would occasionally find some type of giant wolf spiders in my parent's old house. Mom didn't care. Dad wouldn't go near them without a blunt object in hand. I usually tried to pick them up and scare the dogs with them...

The eye position of them is one of the easiest to fing out, together with jumping spiders.

I get them in my basement sometimes, I do enjoy looking at their natural camouflage, but when I get to about a few feet form them, they always bolt behind the dryer and "disappear" for weeks on end until I can find one sitting in the open again.

We don't have any house-dwelling wolves here, only tegenarias and the occasional black lace weaver. But the behaviour you describe sounds a lot like tegenarias, which have superficial similarities to wolf spiders.
