Copper dragon doodle today! I’m back from Dragon Con and I figured a dragon would be a good thing to draw to get back in the swing of things. Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to draw while I was out of town :<
So I’ve always loved the 3rd edition Dungeons and Dragons designs that Todd Lockwood developed for the chromatic and metallic dragons. Oh lordy, I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve drawn them. All of them. My faves were always the blue and copper dragons, though. So imagine my delight when I got to meet Todd Lockwood at Dragon Con! HOMFG! I kinda got all weak in the knees and rambled on for a bit about how much I loved his work and how much it influenced me and all that. Then I noticed that he had a bunch of ORIGINAL ARTWORK with him. HHHHNNNNNNG! So I started looking through the box and BOOM! Dragons! He had the original line art for a handful of the dragons he drew for the D&D 3rd edition monster manual. Then I just about died!
Sadly, he didn’t have the lineart for the blue dragon, but he did have some head studies which I snapped up pretty damn quick. I bought a handful of prints as well and went on my gleeful way. That was Friday. But I couldn’t get the copper dragon lineart out of my head. It was in the box and it was pretty affordable ($300 as compared to $500 for the red dragon) and I just knew I had to have it. So the next day I got my butt right back to Todd Lockwood’s little booth and bought the lineart for this lovely piece of art right here. Guys, I own the original for that piece. The original. I gushed so much that he gave me a hug for being so excited to own it. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve drawn off that picture and just stared at it and loved it. NOW IT IS MINE! <3 I got a print of the colored version as well to matte and frame with it. I’ll be doing that as soon as I can afford to.
So in honor of all that, have some copper dragon art. I can foresee me drawing a lot of dragons in the next few weeks. Yup. Okay, I’ll go calm down now…

:D Coppers are awesome!
And I've gotta say, reading your story was somewhere between adorable and awesome. By the time I got to the end, I was all excited for you, myself! Seeing somebody gush about one's work that way is really touching, and (in my opinion) the best compliment an artist can get, to see that their work inspires and affects somebody that way. I'm TOTALLY jealous, because Mr. Lockwood and the look he created for 3rd Edition was a huge influence on me in college. Congrats on getting to meet him, and on getting to take home a piece of D&D history. :3

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who was that big of a Todd Lockwood fan. And that I'm not alone in how he inspired my art <3 It was an awesome experience and I'm glad someone else out there can appreciate what that meant. I feel like such a goober sometimes for getting so excited about that sort of thing when no one else I know does. Thank you for your comment! It made me feel less silly ^^;
