If you wanted to do something similar, I know Michaels has a nifty gold leafing set that comes with a pen/marker type thingy that has an adhesive in it and you "draw" with it first and then lay a sheet of the included gold leaf where you've marked with the pen (the adhesive comes out lightly tinted so you can actually see it which is helpful) and you rub/pat it onto the adhesive so it sticks. It only takes a few moments before you can pull away the excess and then you can brush away any extra little fluffs of the leafing to get good edges. It's SUPER easy and looks fancy! I've used it in the past and need to get another set actually as I've used mine just about up XD if you want I can send a pic of how it looks if you were to write and leaf a name or something.

Ack meant to say this would be a great way to get the appearance of a metallic background without actually using stiffer foil ;)

That might be cool for a bigger piece, I'll look into it sometime. For badges at a con though I have to be able to bang them out pretty quickly, that's why I'm not even sure I want to mess with the foil cuz its such a pain in the ass to work with. Looks cool, but if I have to sit and tape everything down and run the badges through the laminator twice, its gonna slow me down big-time. T.T

That's why I think you'd like the quickie gold leafing pen. ;) the stuff dries in seconds and while I've never laminated anything I've ever used it on (hard to laminate a sketchbook XD ) I think it'd hold up perfectly.

I've seen metallic scrapbook paper. Not nearly as shiny as foil but it still has a sheen - and with paper texture so it should hold pen/marker and glue just as easily as regular paper.
