You forget, if they can instantaneously transfer money from your account to theirs, but have 5 days to tell you they have it, thats 5 days intrest they have on that money before they acknowledge its existance. .thats why cheques used to have 3 working days clearence, average 5 days, and now have 5 working days clearence, average 9 days. Its due to income due to cheque handling droping by ovre 40%, so they hold them 40% longer to get the return back up.
