Well, I don't know in general cause I'm not a vet unfortunately.
Brave got it because of irregular maintenance and feeding.
The stable where I bought him is really horrible =(
Tiny stalls, a lot of shit in each of them. So all of horses try to sleep only standing. But sometimes they have to lay down for a rest on a VERY cold floor without any litter.

And of course they even don't have blankets. We have rather cold winters: -15 - -20 deg C (+5 - -4 deg F, I guess) with VERY cold wind. So inside this stable it's about -7C (19F) all winter long :O

Most of horses who were born here are capable of great endurance, but not all of them =( Brave even doesn't have a warm winter coat. It doesn't grow.
And of course feeding, the worst part. I just can't translate everything. But the result of such maintenance and feeding is: 15 yo horse is old not ridable horse, 18 yo is a very old horse. Tandem's mother died last winter when she was only 19

*hugs back* he loves doing that. Luckily for me he always does that very gingerly and tryes not to kick anybody with his hooves =)
