“Western Air Express flight 729 with passage to Karin is paging passenger Alex S. Yena, please make your way to gate A5 now as your spaceplane is fully loaded.” Sally spoke cheerfully into the intercom system, allowing a small bit of urgency into her voice. It was very, VERY unusual for anyone to be late on one of these flights, both due to the fairly high cost and huge demand for a seat aboard one, thanks in no small part to the destination!
The black furred wolfess frowned and stared down at the passenger manifest, everyone was accounted for except for one ‘A. Yena’. She glanced up and could see no one coming and so, with a shrug, turned to her companion and said “Well, I guess we better tell them to lock up...” But just as she finished there was a sudden cry of “WAIT!” from the centre of the large crowd milling about the terminal, followed by frantic breathing as a short fur burst out from the crowd, running towards the gate with his carryon slumped over his back.
“I’m.. *GASP* here!” He cried, placing his boarding pass and photo ID on the desk in front of Sally who managed a blink of surprise before checking over both items. The pass was in order, and the man in the ID was unmistakably the one before her right now, with his the two large sabers jutting out from either side of his mouth, two large puppy dog eyes, and a mop of brownish hair sitting atop of his head.
Sally gave him a smile and handed back his papers. “Looks like you’re all set, sir! Better hurry on, we’ve been waiting for you!”
The saberyena breathed a sigh of relief “Oh thank goddess, you didn’t leave yet! I’m so sorry, I got held up by airport security... These fangs can have their disadvantages sometimes!”
She nodded and gave him a sympathetic smile “I understand, if it’s any consolation I think they’re very dashing! Now you’d better get on or they’re gonna leave without you!”
Alex shot her a big grin, blushing a bit before running into the jetway, shouting “THANKS!” over his shoulder.
******************************************************************************
“Ok, looks like our last passenger is checked in, lets get everyone seated and I’ll give West the go ahead.” Rina, a rabbit fur and one of the two flight attendants on this trip spoke to her co-worker beside her. She’d worked plenty of times with Vivian, and she found the young snow leopardess to be a joy to hang around with, and very good with the passengers.
“Sure thing! I’ll take the left aisle, you take the right?” Vivian grinned at her, adjusting her neck scarf.
Rina nodded and smiled back “Sounds good, meet you at the back!”
And with that Rina pulled the passenger door shut, hearing the airtight locks seal with a loud HISS before a green light indicated that the door was secure and she was free to check on the passengers before takeoff. She began walking down the aisles maintaining a perfect step as the craft jolted into motion as it was pushed back onto the taxiway. When she came to the third row she found a young human with medium length curly hair and a white T-shirt on trying to fit a mountain bike into the overhead compartment.
“Um, sir! I don’t believe that it’s going to fit...”
“I’LL MAKE IT FIT!” He snapped at her, eyes full of frustration. He slammed the bike repeatedly into the compartment before realizing that the handlebars were just not going to go in all the way.
“Sir, we DO carry portable shrinking devices for situations like this, we can grow it back as soon as we land.”
“Well... alright! But be careful with her! She’s sensitive!” He let go of the bike reluctantly as Rina slipped a small device out of her left pocket that resembled a cheesy 50’s sci-fi raygun and fired a beam of blue light at the bike which began to dwindle down in size, finally stopping at just 6 inches tall! She picked up the bike and handed it over to him. “There you go sir, now please take your seat. We will be taking off shortly.”
He gave a soft whimper in reply as the now tiny mountain bike was placed into his palm before sitting back down into his seat forlornly. “Sh-she’s gonna be ok, right?”
“Oh yes sir! It should be a very smooth flight today, we’ve got beautiful weather for takeoff, so there’s no chance of her getting bounced around.”
He seemed satisfied with that answer and buckled his seatbelt, still cupping the tiny bike in his hands before placing a high quality headset onto his head and lying back into the chair to listen to some Queen.
Rina shook her head, chuckling as she continued down the aisle to find a well muscled and curvaceous cougaress struggling to fit into her seat.
“GRAH! Prrfing... seatbelts...” She growled as she frustratedly attempted to pull the blue strap and silver buckle around her toned core, but to no avail.
“Oh dear, would you like some help, ma’am?”
“Prrf! Gah!” She slumped back into her seat and shook her head “They dun’ make seats for my build it seems!”
Rina gave her a sympathetic smile “Well, not normally no! However this aircraft comes equipped with seats that can extend a fair amount to accommodate those with bulkier builds!” She leaned over to adjust a dial on the back of the seat and asked over her shoulder “Ooh! You don’t have anyone sitting next to you, do you? If so, they could get a bit... squished!”
The cougaress shot her a grin and shook her head “Well, Bren’s sittin’ there. But I dun’ think he’ll mind much!”
Rina let out a chuckle and nodded, adjusting the chair so it would extend out to it’s maximum settings. “There you are! Try the belt now!”
The cougaress slipped the seatbelt easily around her waist and Rina noted her tail waggling happily “Wow, thanks! This is much better! Though I do have one more question, prrf!”
Rina steadied herself against the seat as the spaceplane went over a bump “Oh yes? What’s that?”
“Well there be any milk served on the flight? I’m thirsty, prrf!”
She grinned and shook her head “Nope, sorry ma’am, the flight isn’t long enough for any sort of food service, though I’m sure once we land Karin will give you all the milk you could ever want!”
“Aww! Well, ok I guess I can survive until then! Thanks, prrf!” And with that she settled back into her seat and grinned at a smaller male cougar who was approaching with a nervous look on his face.
Rina, satisfied that they were taken care of, continued down the aisle. It seemed as though there was a lot of traffic today since the air/spacecraft was still stopped on a taxiway.
She stopped suddenly as she arrived at a row with a peaceful looking arcanine anthro in it as she realized the spaceplane was listing very slightly to that side. She checked the overhead compartment and was surprised to find it empty, so she tapped the arcanine woman on the shoulder and said “Pardon me, but do you have any baggage beneath your seat that might be over 22 kilos?”
She looked over to Rina and shook her head “Err, no! No I actually don’t have that much stuff in terms of carry-on. Why do you ask?”
Rina blushed and replied slowly “Well... how do I put this diplomatically.... the spacecraft is sorta... listing to this side.... like, to the side and back, if it was just to the side I’d have thought maybe it was that cougaress up there, buuuuuut since it seems to be concentrated on... your spot.... I mean, I have to assume that...”
The arcanine woman seemed to be suppressing a laugh as she held her paw up for Rina to stop “It’s perfectly alright! Here, I think I can fix it for you!” She shut her eyes a moment, and the spaceplane seemed to centre itself once again. Another part of Rina seemed to note that the woman appeared to be floating in her seat slightly, but she figured it was best not to ask.
“There!” She said with a grin. “How’s that?”
“Absolutely perfect! Thank you so much! I’m very sorry to have bothered you.”
“Oh, think nothing of it” And with that she settled back into her seat and Rina went to go check on the last passenger, a timid looking Absol morph glancing outside from time to time, hopping in his seat with a sort of nervous excitement.
She stepped over to him and leaned down, smiling “Do you need anything before we take off sir, or are you all set here?”
He look thoughtful for a moment and shook his head, his blue scythe gleaming as the orange sunset outside reflected on it “No, I can’t really think of anything really! As a matter of fact this is probably one of the best times of my life!”
Rina had to chuckle gently at that “Oh yes? It’s always nice to see an enthusiastic passenger!”
He nodded quickly and grinned “Oh yeah! I mean, who wouldn’t be enthusiastic!? We’re gonna go and live on the toes of a gigantic arcanine, everyday will be floof and wonderfulness! And then there’s that other Absol woman, whooooo myyyyy gooodness! I intend to travel between them *frequently*.”
“Well, we do offer service from Karin to Absolution, as well as in the opposite direction, so I’m sure you’ll get well acquainted with both!”
“I know, I know, I KNOW! GODDESS, I’m so excited!!!”
Rina laughed and patted him gently on the shoulder “We’ll be taking off any minute now, Mr.....?”
“Nathan.” He grinned at her “Please, just call me Nathan!”
“Nathan, excellent! Well we’re gonna up and on our way really soon, so don’t you fret!”
Rina walked down the rest of the way to the tail-section of the spaceplane and saw that Vivian was already waiting there.
“So did everything go alright on your end?” the snow leopardess asked as she steadied herself against the wall.
“Yup! Everyone’s settled! How about you?”
“All good here!”
Rina nodded satisfiedly. “Great, let’s start the safety demo then, shall we?”
“Ready when you are!” said Vivian as she grabbed the demo seatbelt and oxygen mask from a cabinet and placed them on the small stainless steel counter next to her.
Rina walked briskly up to the front, her arms on the overhead bins to both steady herself and make sure they were fully locked before turning around with the phone in her hand to make the announcement.
*Ding* “Aaaalrighty folks, good morning and welcome to Western Air Express flight 729. We’ll be taking off shortly and then we’ll be on our way to in between Karins big and second toes, but first we’ll be briefing you on the safety features of this air-space capable craft. As well, on the flight deck this morning we have Captain Elias “West” Stannson, and First officer Moya; and in the back we have the lovely Vivian Ferros.” Vivian gave a small wave. “And myself, Rina Vicenzi. Now, if you’ll look at the front of your seats...”
******************************************************************************
West grimaced and shook his head as he heard the safety briefing begin. “Well FINALLY. Geeze, if we hadn’t been caught up in traffic we might’ve had to hold on take off before they could make the announcement. That would go over *so* well with air traffic control. I mean, on top of them having to vector us to a special runway!”
“Oh calm down Mr. Worry-Wart. We’re on our way now, and by the time we’ll be set up for takeoff they’ll have finished the crosscheck and everything!” Moya smiled at him, talking in a soft soothing tone.
West sighed and was about to reply when the ground controller suddenly addressed them.
“Air Express 729 taxi to position and hold.”
Moya pressed the TALK button on her headset and replied “Position and hold, air express 729.”
“Here we go.” West eased the engine throttles forward a bit, powering them up just enough to have the spaceplane roll smoothly onto the sophisticated track that served as its runway. Once they had moved into position two massive clamps were attached to both wings, these would bring the spaceplane up to a high speed until the engines themselves had spooled up to the point where they could carry it above that set speed, at which point the clamps would detach and the spaceplane would complete the takeoff roll on pure engine power.
West felt his controls shudder slightly as the massive clamps locked into place. He leaned down reached for the cabin address mic, it took normally around 5-9 minutes for the clamps own boosters to warm up, so he could give a quick announcement as he heard the safety presentation end.
“Good morning ladies and gentlemen, this is captain West from the flight deck, ah, we can expect takeoff in about... ah, 5 minutes or so here. Looks like we’ll have clear skies on the way up, so, ah, it should be a smooth run up to the outer stages of the atmosphere. Ahh... estimated arrival time is about 6 minutes after 8 o’clock. The weather in between Karin’s toes is currently sunny, ah, with a chance of skittles and rolo bars raining down later on, the current temperature is a pleasant 22 degrees celsius.” He glanced down at the glass display in front of him that indicated how much of a charge the takeoff clamps had (they were at 50%) before adding. “Flight attendants, crosscheck and prepare for departure.”
There were another few more minutes of silence before a loud *ding* alerted the pilots that the clamps were now fully charged and the spaceplane could takeoff.
“Tower, Air Express 729 has just received notice that the clampers are good for launch.” West called the controller as he straightened himself up in his seat.
“Roger that 729, winds are one-two knots at seven-five, you are cleared for takeoff, contact Earth centre on 165.85 once you have cleared the upper atmosphere. Happy travels.”
“Cleared for takeoff, thank you sir.” West let himself smile a bit as he shifted his gaze to Moya “Ready?”
The lioness nodded and gave him a cheerful grin “Yes indeedy!”.
West reached out and grasped the throttles, feeling Moya grab his own hand as a safety precaution, they then eased them all the way forward and immediately felt the spaceplane jolt as the clamps accelerated them much, much faster than the engines would. He glanced down at his airspeed indicator. “80 knots!”
Moya glanced down at her own to make sure it was showing the same speed. “Check!”
West grasped the control column firmly and watched as the airspeed indicator climbed to a certain point and stopped as they reached the maximum acceleration for the clamps. However within less than two seconds the engines had caught up and the spaceplane was pulling away from the clamps, now halfway down the runway!
“Vee one!” He called as they reached the minimum decision making speed as to whether they could complete or would need to abort the takeoff.
“Okay, firing boosters up in 3...2...” He and Moya grasped a second set of bright red levers that sat behind the main engine controls, these boosters provided as much acceleration as the clamps would, at the expense of having to burn fuel, which was why they weren’t engaged until the latter portion of takeoff.
“Firing!” They threw the booster throttles forward and instantly the spaceplane shook and roared as it’s speed increased exponentially.
“Rotate!” West and Moya jerked back the control columns and took the spaceplane nearly straight up into the sky, they needed a large amount of power to clear the atmosphere first, and then they could switch onto the much gentler ionic engines. Until then though, it was going to be a fairly bumpy ride.
“Positive rate, gear up!” Moya leaned forward and shifted the small grey lever that controlled the landing gear into the upwards position, raising the wheels back into the belly of the spaceplane.
The spaceplane accelerated faster and faster, climbing higher and higher into the sky. The pilots and passengers could feel the shaking and rattling as they climbed past the different levels of the atmosphere, rushing through turbulence and crosswinds. There was a sudden loud POP in the headsets of West and Moya as they passed through the ionosphere, their radios receiving a jolt from the particles as they raced around, thankfully all the equipment was heavily shielded to protect against this.
Next was the thermosphere, the highest point of Earths atmosphere. The spaceplanes life support systems came on, engaging the insulation to protect against the extreme temperatures, and sealing the spaceplane completely making it run off of it’s own oxygen supply and essentially giving the cabin and cockpit their own contained atmosphere. The lights in the cabin were doused as the generators supplied power to more essential systems.
Finally they passed through the exosphere, the farthest layer of the thermosphere, and the spaceplane had officially left Earths atmosphere. The passengers began to feel much lighter as the effects of gravity waned, and anything that was not strapped in began to float around, though thankfully anything that could present a hazard was firmly held in place or tied down by the flight attendants prior to loading. West switched to the ionic engines and a pleasant hum filled the cabin as they pushed the spaceplane-turned-spaceship gently towards the massive orange structure far off in the distance.
West adjusted the dials on the radios to 165.85 and informed Earth Centre that they had cleared the atmosphere just fine and were on their way to Karin. After making sure that everything was in order he took his headset off and enjoyed the breathtaking view. Earth had changed considerably since the rather unexpected arrival of two Goddesses, one was an anthro absol named, appropriately enough, Absolution, and the other was an anthro arcanine named Karin. The two had been very, VERY happy to arrive at the spaceplanet, and had been more than ready to welcome the population onto themselves, particularly their paws. They had started off with giving the populations of North America and Australia respectively a fantastic view of the underside of their toes, with most of their main pad covering the continent below. (Karin covering South America, and Absolution finding Antarctica too cold, and so shifting herself to cover most of Asia instead). After a few days they shifted to whichever countries and continents they had missed, giving no part of the Earth more time than the other. Any initial panic that had infected people had more than gone at this point. Soon some even wished there was a way to visit, or even live on their wonderful paws!
Coincidentally at this time West had received sudden inspiration for the design of the spaceplanes that could ferry people to and from the Goddesses paws, there was only one drawback: the massive cost involved meant that only a select few particularly rich people could afford to take the journey. However he still went ahead and pitched the idea, which surprisingly enough became massively popular! Even people who should not have made enough to get a ticket were able to purchase one, all they needed to do was wish for one and instantly the cash would appear before them, with a note from either Goddess saying that they could not wait to see them! From that day forward he’d made quite a bit of business flying people from Earth to either Karin or Absolution, and even between the two Goddesses themselves!
He noted the distinctive white fur and blue pad of Absolutions smallest toe wiggling gently against the earth, as it shrank away in the distance and then turned his attention to the bright orange fur lined with black stripes that made up the incredible amounts of fluff that permeated in between Karins absolutely massive toes. Then, even farther beyond that was a wall of fine red fibres that made up her silk kimono. And if you looked even farther you could see her warm, smiling face and the unbelievably fluffy tail beyond it! West always enjoyed landing on Karin, she was always very obliging with moving her paw to make his entry an easy one, she had even engaged them in polite conversation on more than a few occasions, when she could spare the time from talking to several other friends that had already taken up residence in between, on, or beneath her toes.
West armed the navigational computer for the descent down. The runway was located on her soft, pink skin, however to get there he would first have to fly through several miles of thick, humungous fur. Not that crashing on a strand would be a problem, Karin would prevent any harm from befalling the passengers and flight crew, however they would have to walk from the top of one of her massive fur strands all the way to the bottom, which could take weeks! Wonderful, glorious weeks mind you, but there were still lots of people that wanted to be ferried up here!
The spaceplane entered into the atmosphere that surrounded Karin’s entire body, shuddering slightly as it entered back into the gentle wind that always seemed to be blowing. West opened up the air bleed valves and reset the spaceplane for atmospheric flight, smiling as the beautiful scent that permeated the air on Karin wafted into the plane. Whenever it was inhaled one would instantly relax and all worries vanished from their mind. That was what West felt now, and he had perfect clarity as he slowed the spaceplane down for the approach, flying above and below, and sometimes even through massive blades of fiery orange fur until the dark speck of the runway, and the brownish smudge of the settlement beyond it were visible to him.
“Ok, time for the descent, should be easy enough!” He grinned at Moya, all the stress from before takeoff now evidently gone.
“For sure, we even beat that Rolo rain storm! I wasn’t looking forward to getting chocolate off the plane again...” Moya replied, chuckling.
The spaceplane began its descent, slowing down and lowering it’s flaps and landing gear as it approached the runway. The passengers took the time to marvel at the beautiful, huge landscape that would be their home for a long, LONG time to come.
Off in the distance and through the trees one could spot a large freshwater lake that Karin had put onto her toes for the enjoyment of the folks living on them. It featured a 5 star hotel, waterskiing, swimming, a beautiful beach, and constantly sunny weather for free! No lineups, and perfect service from all of the little sprites of herself that staffed the facilities there. Up ahead and beyond the airport was the settlement that most of the people lived in. All of the houses were just the right size for whomever needed them! Not too big, not too small, all featured beautiful furnishings, a large kitchen and bathroom, and a nice entertainment system for those that wished to use them! Though most of a persons needs were taken care for them by Karin in the first place. So really they were just there for those who wished to take care of themselves still, or even if they wanted to invite Karin herself over for dinner, she certainly did not mind sending a much smaller projection of herself!
And for those who were more adventurous than others they could travel up Karins entire body, all the way to the top of her head, where she offered the biggest kiss of their life for those intrepid enough to make the entire journey! Of course virtually any part of her body was available for settling in, such as her thick warm thighs, the insane levels of fluff that made up her exceedingly warm belly, and even the tip of her nose, for those that wanted that awe-inspiring view!
West turned on the cabin addressing system to make one last announcement to the passengers. “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ll be landing on Karins paw in a few minutes here, now I know you have a choice of carriers, and I’d like to thank you on behalf of Moya, Rina, Vivian, myself, and everyone else at Western Air Express for choosing us. We hope you’ve had an enjoyable flight, and we hope to see you again!”
The idea for this was one often joked about during
