From what I saw of the one-hour gameplay video on youtube, it's pretty darn close to the original (I still play it from time to time and I played SO MUCH back in the day, so it's fairly freshly committed to my memory :)).

Same here; it looks like a nice refresh more than anything else. And the concept of cover is implemented differently (to-hit chance reduced + damage reduction, it seems), but still faithful to the original.
And the armor look futuristic yet not out-of-this-world either.
And seeing how badass with psyonics sectoids are, I weep when we'll encounter etherals. >_>
