I think I missed this one! Very nice! Good use of limited palette, nice latyout, cool use of the snake skeleton in the background. There's a sort of Mad Max meets John Woo feel to this!

I think I googled for "scratchy brushes" for this one. One really nice pack, though, is goro's brush set. Dude's also got some nice tutorials there.

seconding the font thing. is the design yours as well as the painting?

Yes, the publisher didn't have an existing design template for their line of novels, so I offered to put one together for them.

I posted up another cover from the same series a few days ago -- the publisher ended up going with a different illustration for that one, but the frame and text are as they are in that image.

Well then compliments to your design skills too. It's always cool to come across; for whatever reason grafix dezine is underrepresented in furry-land

Yeah, it's true. I think that some of that is because a lot of the community's artists get inspired to start doing art specifically for the community, and that tends to lend itself more to illustration than graphic design, I think. It's tough to even know what "furry GD" would even look like ^_^

That, and illustration is kind of freeform, do-your-own-thing art, while graphic design and typography and the rest are all more rules-oriented. That means less fun for a lot of people, and it can also be tough for people to just spontaneously jump into it without any education or other formal exposure to it.

Still, I love both, and I hope more people start playing around with design and text, too ^_^ It's super fun!

I also like doing covers, whether it's for books, magazines, comics, or whatever. It's fun tying in my art to an existing narrative, and that helps me create an image that tells a story in itself.

Hope that one day all this art training pays off and I get to illustrate. Book covers would be wonderful, and I'd hate to be one of those doofus' who sits on their BA for the rest of their life.

What kind of training do you have? I'm curious. :)

I'm mostly self-taught, as far as digital painting goes, but I've drawn as a hobby for maybe 12 years or so?

After I finished my undergraduate studies in something totally unrelated, I decided I wanted to put in some serious time on my art, so I went to a 1-year art school program that basically gave me access to whatever undergrad art courses at this design school I wanted for the year. I focused on digital illustration there, but dabbled in as much other stuff as I could, from graphic design to typography to screenprinting to comics to animation...

These days, my day job uses my BA pretty much exactly, and only do art here and there when a freelance job comes around. Well, that and drawing animal people every so often for kicks ^_^

Haha, I love taking credit for the font as if I had anything at all to do with making it ^_^ I guess not picking a dumb one earns me some marginal points, but really the credit goes to the folks who spend hour after gruelling hour tweaking individual letterforms in Illustrator -- my hat's off to you guys, wherever you are.

Yeah, font making is an interesting artform of itself, considering it's mostly about tweaking details that end up being fractions of a millimeter on the paper. Gotta try that some day, sounds like fun. ^^

I've actually been wondering who the guy on the cover was supposed to be. I've read the whole story and I still have no idea who it is :) No one dresses like that in the story.

Okay, I have to admit it was a real crusade to get the White Crusade. It's a long story...

First, this book was out of stock for several months in Amazon.com, but two copies of it came when I was ordering some items in april, just in time before the credit card ran out of dollars... Darn national-legal-limits! I just get 400 bucks by year!!

Second, the shipment came on time to my boss mailbox in the States. But when my stuff (and his stuff) depated from USA to Venezuela..., well..., the entire shipment got lost on its way home . Our cargo company said that maybe all our stuff was stolen. I lost all my hopes at that time .

But today, after our cargo company did its detective homework, some of our stuff came to our store in Caracas today... And there was my copy of Bed Goodridge' White Crusade The copy was a little mistreated, but the book is finally with me now .

I'll write you again as soon as I finish the book. I have a lot of expectations with Ben's work... By the way, and I repeat, your cover-art is beautiful!!
