Sorry for the photo - the actual size of the picture is 20"x30", so I'm not going to scan it in pieces and assemble it until its actually complete - but I figured why not take pictures while I'm working...
Anyways, this is about 14 hours into a sketch - the sketch isn't done, theres a lot of detail I'll be adding in - a bunch more characters that right now are only suggested "weeble" forms right now, etc.
This is going to be my big piece for the FC art show, where the theme is "The Fur East" - which is something I got really excited about, since I love asian themed artwork. Anyways, the idea behind this is a Chinese New Year's dragon dance, down a Chinatown street (a fictional Chinatown, in that I designed all the architecture/the whole scene myself. The gateway is based on ones that exist, but its essentially my creation as well, and not fully detailed yet)
What I did first, obviously, is to pencil in the background. I started with just a few lines to indicate the perspective - it took me a few tries to decide on a perspective that I liked... And then I started roughing in building shapes, which I embellished upon. After the buildings and the scene were built, I put the dragon in roughly how I wanted it, and the dragon dancers - and I started sketching some other shapes for the relative sizes of the characters that will be filling the scene.
I've got a lot of ideas for where I want this to go, but I'm going to work on it more tomorrow. I want to have this done well in advance of the show so I can take it in and have it framed up nicely.

XD Not really. I mean, the chinese had dragons pegged right. To them, we're benevolent, sentient, magical creatures. ^.=.^
...Unlike the winged alligators with sharper teeth we were portrayed as by western civilization. :(
A dragon would actually probably be well-recieved in China.

oh ho HO! *rubs hands together* I can't wait to see this thing painted up and hung at the art show. It's going to look GREAT I just know it! It's obvious you spend a great deal of time on your backgrounds, what references did you use to compose this piece? Again, I love it. I cannot WAIT to see it done! ^^
Haha I can't wait 'til its done, too. No, I'm actually having fun with it - though I know I will have moments where I will be sick of it before its done.
As far as references, I googled things like 'dragon dance' 'chinese new year' and 'china town', and collected a bunch of pictures that I drew bits and pieces from.
The gate itself is based off the Chinatown gate in London ... the buildings are pretty much my own designs - as is the perspective.. I looked at lots of buildings for ideas on construction and window shape - and I got ideas from pictures of dragon dances for the outfits of the dancers, and the design of the dragon was pretty much my own, but also looking at chinese dragons for ideas.
Its actually kindof easier that I'm not using heavy reference - because when I do the painting, I can create it all myself instead of having to doublecheck my reference for colors, etc. like I had to do with the golden gate bridge painting.

We're *supposed* to do that, but for the most part we're nice to people unless they are aggressively dumb. Things will be busy (they always are from now until February), and we have this corporate clown who's going to show up since our District Manager is on maternity leave.
Holidays and weekends are always the worst times to come in; always busy for those.
