This is my classic Rifts character, Ed, as masterfully drawn by the wonderful
Kristal. She's drawn him thrice before and has never once failed to deliver anything but awesome, and this time is no exception!
For the uninformed, Rifts is a sci-fi/fantasy tabletop game set on an Earth that is the lynchpin of the entire megaverse. Following a nuclear war, Earth's latent leyline energies went into overdrive, causing portals to other worlds to pop up all over the planet, bringing with them the return of magic, ancient gods, and far stranger, more dangerous things.
And then there's Ed. Ed was an uplifted created by the Coalition States, the most prominent nation in North America. A human-supremacist fascist state, the Coalition used uplifted, psychic animals in their war against demons, dimensional beings (known as D-Bee's), and other nation-states. Mutant dogs known as Dog Boys were especially common, and though they were as intelligent and capable as humans, they were treated like humans treat dogs today, as valued companions and friends, but still animals.
Ed, being an experimental hyena variant, was treated more like a hyena would be in the modern day: looked down upon as an immoral scavenger at best. As such, he never really fit in very well. Instead of being posted in a regular Dog Boy company, he was given over to the Coalition Rangers, essentially similar to your modern day United States Army Rangers.
Ed's military career didn't last very long; eventually he couldn't stomach the horrible atrocities he saw Coalition forces committing, including genocide of non-human Dimensional Beings. One day, rather than continue working for what he saw to be an evil government, Ed simply marched out of camp and never returned.
Long story short, with nowhere else to go, Ed became a traveling gun in Lone Star, the Coalition's name for the state of Texas. He battled bandits, vampires, Coalition troops, and all kinds of other things. He was an extremely fun character to play, and still holds a special place in my heart.
