CLANG! The basketball ricocheted off the rim towards the furs below. They jostled for position, competitively vying for the rebound. A caracal emerged victorious and he immediately passed the ball to a zebra mare.

Pura Doris the zebra streaked down the paved court, dribbling ferociously, the other players chasing her like the tail of a comet. Her fierce brown eyes were focused on the hoop at the far end, her ears swiveled back listening to her pursuers, her attention undivided, except for…

“Time out!” Pura Doris’s hooves skidded to a stop and she crouched down to the asphalt. The other players stumbled around her to avoid tripping as the abandoned ball bounced to a stop.

“Geez!”

“Look out!”

“What the hell, PD?”

“What are you doing here, little fellow? The key’s no place for you,” Pura Doris said kindly to a small creature creeping across the pavement.

“It’s a slug.”

“Ew.”

“Don’t touch it!”

“Let’s get you somewhere safe. C’mon, scoot.” She gently guided the gastropod onto her outstretched hand.

“PD, you’re interrupting our game for a /slug/?”

“Scoot scoot. There we go. Let’s get you some lettuce. You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”

“PD, are you even listening to me?”

“I hear you. Seriously, it’s just a friendly game, guys. This’ll only take a minute. And I’ve told you I don’t like being called ‘PD.’”

“Well, Pura Doris is too long. What are we supposed to call you?”

“Who’s a cute little mollusc? You are, yes you are,” Pura Doris cooed.

“Hey, what are we supposed to call you?!”
