we're designing characters inspired by the story Doctor DeSoto, about a mouse dentist. Here's DeSoto himself!
He's described as having really tiny hands, and those huge gloves make them bigger but it emphasizes their tininess in a way. I wanted him to be a relatively serious character who commands some authority.
I really wanted the whole deal to be a little bit old fashioned. I also don't want those white eyeballs that are all over animation, animals don't have much visible eyewhites, and it is often hella creepy on a cartoon too.

My teacher has worked in the animation industry for ages, and she says that most of the industry has this idea that 3D eyes have to be like that to be relate-able - even if it kills a lot of the classic children book designs when they turn them 3D. But still there's plenty of 3D animation that doesn't do it, and it still sells, it's just Dreamworks+Pixar that are stuck in their habits or something.
