The inn was a modest affair known locally as The Lucky Foot, but in true Lep'kufft fashion it was homey and welcoming. It had been built with great attention to comfort, snuggled between two large oaks that shaded its yard from the sun and sheltered it from the rain. Smoke curled from its chimney and the aroma of vegetable stew could be scented as they had arrived. A warm, golden glow poured out through the open doors and shutters. Kit spied several Dogs among the folk entering and leaving the inn, laughing and calling to one another, and realized that either the fare was excellent or there was no other inn within miles. Either boded well for the inn's business, but she was still surprised to see any Dogonian patronizing a Lep'kufft establishment, given the unfortunate past relations between rabbit and canine species.
They entered the inn and were welcomed by the heat of the hearth, their noses nearly overwhelmed by the aromas of many delicious foods cooking in the kitchens. The innkeeper, a large, fat rabbit with dirty white fur and a lopsided smile, greeted them all enthusiastically. “You’re just in time for dinner!” he bellowed jovially as he showed them in to the dining hall. Billy hopped onto a bench and began grabbing rolls. Kit sat more gracefully beside him, while Legmender lagged behind to make arrangements for rooms. “Rooms!” laughed the innkeeper. “Of course we have rooms! Separate for the Lady? Of course! Hildy! Tunia! See to getting that room in the upstairs corner ready for the good lady, and have Felar take the gentlemen’s bags up to number fourteen! And make sure there’s a fire in the hearths! How’s that, ma’am? Chicken! Well, now, we can arrange that! We’re mostly a Lep’kufft establishment for Lepine tastes, but we are in Dogonia after all! Talal! Find us a chicken and put it in the pot, boy! But mind that you pluck it first!” And with a gusty guffaw, he gamboled off to see to their accommodations.
“He’s looking to pad the bill,” Legmender sighed to Kit as he woefully weighed his purse in his hand, judging the cost of the night against the cost of the remainder of their journey. “And he’s hoping for a fat tip.” All the same, the old rabbit seemed more relaxed and at ease than they had been on the road, and was soon chatting amiably away with the innkeeper over a mug of ale.
