In my mind, the dragon is clearly showing the knight that there is no power comparison. If the guy is smart enough, he'll go back to his castle, there will be no blood spilt and everybody will live happy ever after... :)

there is another way... i once read a short story where the dragon slayer doused the virgin sacrifice so heavily with sleeping drugs that the dragon was helpless after that, and easily slain. :) but, there. :)
