.... Every notice how in fantasy games, "Thief" is pretty much synonymous with "Assassin?" Put a GW2 thief and an "assassin" from any other game, and you wouldn't be able to tell who was who! D:

In Warcraft, Rogues are assassins that pickpocket and lockpick lockboxes, which makes them a hybrid of assassin and thief. In the RP world, Rogues could be a wide range of people, they can be thieves, soldiers, a small-town girl with a kitchen knife, Indiana Jones, ninjas, you name it. They are simply a penniless person that is hired by rich people to do the lowest jobs that the rich people don't want to do, and their motto is "We do the dirty work so YOU don't have to!" I believe this is why most "thieves" are also "assassins" because they are just doing what it takes to make a buck and often get hired to do different jobs. Usually a big boss is keeping the best treasures, so of course you must assassinate him to get to the treasure. It makes sense to have both skills.
