Thanks for the comment. On the pistol I like to point a reason why I linked the Pistol to the foregrip. Around the duct tape I will have a Leather pouch to store the pistol. I wanted to have a quick draw feature fore the pistol. Have the Pistol next to the foregrip. I also assume that the extra weight from the front would help control recoil. But increases weapon sway if I remember.
DISCLAIMER: I can be an asshole at times, but it's not intentional... my only goal here is to share what I've learned about firearms and shooting, so please don't take the following in the wrong way.
Here's the issue with that:
Pistols, while they're capable of being operated with one hand only, can be shot much faster and more accurately with a two-handed grip. And if, in a fight, your primary weapon goes down, you're gonna need to squeeze every bit of capability out of your sidearm (since it's vastly inferior to a rifle or shotgun in terms of stopping power, accuracy, controllability, etc.). Juggling a rifle in one hand while trying to draw a pistol from it with the other isn't exactly a winning proposition.
In a combat scenario, your long gun is going to be mounted on a sling and set up so that it rests on your chest (believe me, it REALLY sucks to have to carry a rifle around without a sling for a few hours). So with that sling, you can drop your rifle/shotgun without anything bad happening to it, which then leaves both hands free to get your sidearm into action.
Another point here is weapon retention. If you're in a firefight and your primary weapon's sling snaps, you want to have a backup available. But if your pistol's mounted on the rifle or shotgun that just dropped, you're screwed. If it's attached to you via a good retention holster, though, it'll be an option regardless of what happens to your other gun.
Finally, if I can touch on the idea of weight on a rifle-- all other things being equal, a rifle that weighs more is a bad thing. Will additional weight reduce recoil? Yes. But it also makes your gun less maneuverable and more fatiguing to carry. Now if that extra weight goes towards something useful like an optic, foregrip, etc. it may be a trade-off worth making. Tacking dead weight on there that could just be worn on your hip instead won't do you much good.
And regardless of what video games may tell you, weapon sway is due to a dozen different factors. Weight is one, but so is the user's arm strength, fatigue level, the ergonomics of the gun being held, the user's level of training, posture, etc.
If you want to see a textbook long-gun-to-pistol transition, take a look at about 1:22 on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJQTpTljLz8

There is no need to feel like you are "Downing the buzz" so to say on the subject. You haven done it in a mature fashion, in my eyes. So I will not take offence.
Due to my lack of experience with a real rifle. (Firearms are illegal in the UK.) I only have video games as a template for this subject. And I am fully aware of the entertainment purposes of these product. While in the mind set of character inside this equipment. The setting is of close quaters fight. Generally the undead. So as any non-army personel. I like to get as many shots off as possible. And a quick use of the pistol and once the danger is dead, I would drop the pistol and grab a clip. And so on. I's feel more use if the pistol was at the end as so the rifle is already aimed and so the pistol attached would be in the general direction too.
As for the rifle, In other pictures I have drawn. I have a rifle sized pouch that the rifle will sit in, when not in use. When needed, All is needed is to rip it from the chest and the sling already on it will provide that kind of temporary hold without using the pouch.
For the sling snapping, There's not much I can say. You've hit the nail on the head. But the pistol is attached via a chain with the holster on the barrel end of the rifle. Wouldn't the length of chain make it useful?
Taking point of extra weight on the barrel. You say it may not be a good trade off. Well, What about underslang shotguns and or flamethrowers? (I doubt flamethrowers existed but I am using them for example.) They are a secondary weapon from what I know and a Pistol I would think is just that . Side slang more than underslang but a secondary I would assume. Are those dead weight?
Finally, With the points you have said, to base my responce on is this. All your points blow me out of the water. After all, Reality will never be full present in a video game. So I wouldn't know any of the answers to them. But to point of with the setting this equipment will exist in. I would think people shouting "You got to hit them in the head." and other's shouting "He took 20 bullets to the chest, Why is he not dead?" So I think tweaks between realities might be a factor sorry. (This is not be say I am right and your wrong, Just I think I am in a stalemate on this subject.)
