School pictures were the worst. They always tried to make her smile even though she'd stopped doing that last year in second grade, right before she lost her baby fangs. Now she kept her lips shut; not that it helped. A black kitten in the third grade shouldn't have fangs too big for her mouth.

They called her Dortula.
