A Sense of Understanding
I was having a bad day and felt like everyone was slinging insults one day, many of which, purposely or not, were hitting me square in the face. I picked some of the more snarly ones to use as reference.
I don't hide my beliefs or who I am. I bite my tongue and try to be constructive when I have a differing opinion as opposed to just spitting bile. I got all of those "edgy" insulting cynical days out of my system years ago. I'm better off without them.
Mostly though, it just saddens me that some of the people who are screaming at me to tolerate them also cheerfully spit on the things I hold dear and don't see the hypocrisy of their actions and don't understand why I steer clear or don't join in.
I was hesitant to upload this to FA, but I think I made my point well enough.
Also, if you use this post as an excuse to grandstand for your own personal little bit of bile, I'm going to delete you.

yeah. though some of the anti-Athiest stuff i've seen is as bad. same for any given religion about any other given religion. the same for fandoms, politics, philosophies...
there is no fandom, religion, or anything involving multiple people where some smaller fraction hasn't made the whole group look bad.
it gets particularly bad online because you don't have to actually face the people your talking to, and the anonymity of most places of discussion and commenting means that it is easy to forget that there actually is another person behind those words on the screen.

I might be in the wrong posting this but I'm SLIGHTLY in the school of disliking seeing couples for the simple reason is most of the ones I knew would basically ignore everyone around them and make out even when said people around them had invited them to dinner. People should be happy in a relationship and be able to show it but personally I find it highly rude if they are around friends and constantly ignore the friends that invited them to make out. Also find it rude when as a roommate you bring up a complaint about one of their actions and the other white knights you.
As for all the others not much view on any of them.
As for all the others not much view on any of them.
The person who made the remark was more intended towards "I don't have a boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse, so I hate people who do" instead of not liking it when couples make out in front of them. Although I would almost suspect that the people in the camp of hating the folks who are in relationships become the make-out folks the moment they're in one.
Ah, narcissism.

Gazing adoringly at your husband in PUBLIC?! D8 shock an horror! How can you pointlessly hate men when you do that?!
and then serious. People are very very weird... i had people yell at me when I stop someone from stealing cake from the store, a customer stops me and offers to pay for it.
He then goes right back around and says "I didn't say that, you were gonna pay for it" :/ and then insults me behind my back.
again, People are very STRANGE species...

That statement was aimed at Amanda Palmer (who is married to Neil Gaiman) during a review of one of her shows. Apparently the fact that she adores him means she isn't a feminist. Really happened!
I liked her response: http://amandapalmer.tumblr.com/post.....-gaze-at-males

You shouldn't feel like you can't say what you want because someone might not like it, I think, but it's interesting that those ones were the "tame" things people say. The seeing happy couples one feels particularly important to me though because I just hate how people can be that selfish, Sure when I was single I wished for what those couples I saw had, but I couldn't resent them for it, I mean it's not like it's their fault that I was single. The christian and feminism ones also hit a cord with me due to one very simple question: why does being a feminist or a christian *have* to mean you by default say stupid things or treat people a certain way? It doesn't make sense and anyone who wants to spread a message of universal tolerance should first be looking at themselves before projecting hate onto others.
Not that I agree with it, but I can kind of understand where this one comes from. It's less "I want everyone to be as miserable as me" and more "watching couples together reminds me of what I have been yearning for for a long time and feels like pouring fresh salt on the wound." Or at least, when I've experienced it. The thing I have to remind myself is that they have every right to be happy and enjoy their relationship as long as they aren't being obnoxious about it (there are occasionally those on that side of it, too).

Amen to that. I've also noticed that the ones who scream the loudest for "tolerance" are some of the most intolerant, bigoted assholes around. Those who practice tolerance just do it without much fanfare. And usually get ridiculed for not being tolerant.
This is getting +faved on principle. It's a good message to get out there.

Actually, it took over a century for us to learn what Native Americans learned, centuries before. They used controlled burns to clear out undergrowth and deadwood, before it piled up enough to be dangerous. Back in the 19th and 20th centuries, forest fires were seen as totally destructive, and everything was done to prevent them. Generally it worked, but not only did this disrupt the life cycles of many conifers, instead of many smaller fires, we've had a few huge fires that we struggled to contain.
I don't know the details, but forestry now has a more complicated view of forest fires. We'll see how it goes, and whether climate change makes things harder still.

Reading those comments really just saddened and depressed me at how divisive and divided we have become societally and culturally; everything is "Us vs. Them" with no middle ground. It's become rather frustrating trying to be reasonable, because if you don't fall into either camp in a given situation, each side labels you as "Them" and you're left feeling quite alone and attacked from both sides. Worse-yet, if you want to achieve anything, or be heard on any level, you're practically forced to surrender half of your ideals because you *have* to throw in with one group of the other to leverage whatever ideal you're trying to promote.
I will not say what the issue is, but I was told on a particular social issue by someone once that if I was not 100% with them, then I was the enemy and needed to be destroyed. This was not a life or death issue either. Life would go on without it.
If someone informs me that anyone who is not in 100% agreement with them is the enemy, then they have just earned a new enemy. Even if they're the puppy hugger club of the week.

Threats are an artifice of the weak: the strong-but-merciful will warn, the strong-but-merciless will simply attack. Threatening is simply foolish; it warns of coming aggression, which means the person issuing the threat is either too stupid to realize what they're doing, or they're just attempting to bully the other person, to cow them into submission, hoping desperately that the person they're trying to bully doesn't turn and fight back.
Or like in your case, they foolishly make an enemy where there was none before.

Arrogance has a lot to do with it was well.
"Well, I know *I'm* tolerant, because I believe in supporting these particular people. It's these OTHER people, who won't support them who are intolerant." Forgetting, of course, that there is a difference amongst tolerance, acceptance, and support. But in their arrogance, they assume that anyone who doesn't agree with them must be wrong.

As a Christian , the other cheek rule applies. But the context is so much powerful.
For those who don't know, when Yeshua Ben Maryam, (You know, JC) said that, it was custom that to belittle someone, a slap to the face , right to left was applied. When you put the other cheek, to slap someone, would be from left to right, only done for A EQUAL. So, essentially, the other cheek IS more charged that you think.
And also, silly, silly haters, to ask that I tolerate you , you have to tolerate ME. It goes both ways.

my condolences on having to deal with so many inconsiderate ignorant jerkwads out there in the world. >_< i have personally taken to only seeing and hearing my boyfriend when out and about and ignoring all gazes or comments from people. they do not like that i want to hold my boyfriends hand or hug him when i am feeling uncomfortable in public that is there problem.
There's an underlying theme in those statements which is more than a little sinister, especially when it becomes prevalent in our culture. We can pretty much agree that political correctness is something that very, very few people actually believe in, but for the rest of us, it is a matter of expediency to go along with the latest fads. Cynicism naturally follows.
panel 1: why do people think Libertarians are crazy? I don't get it. I never met a libertarian that was anything but completely passive and chill about everything.
panel 2: I find it funny how Satanists like myself (Laveyan, not Theistic) are more well-behaved than atheists or agnostics towards any other religion. You'd think otherwise, but I've never met a fellow Laveyan that thought less of christians, just less of the religion. People are people.
panel 3: Uh. Apparently feminists are only allowed to be lesbians? Aren't feminists looking for gender equality? why would you even suggest that.
panel 4: I don't even have reasoning for this. Whoever said this needs to just fall in a hole, because these people are the people that make retail store clerks cry, and think anyone with an upset child should burn in hell, regardless of the reason or what the parent's doing about it.

You know, I have to say I agree with this. I may not follow/agree with your beliefs (nor you with mine) but I have never had a satanist come up and tell me I was an idiot, a bigot, and the cause of all the problems in the universe. I mean no slight towards you when I say I find that one of the irony of ironies.
I know! I may not agree with you but I respect you and your beliefs. A church gave us a donation for $400-$600 (I forgot which) to help pay the rent once. I'm very grateful for that. Christians - not all of them, but a good lot of them - are good people, that do good things. Laveyans can be the same. I don't see why religious creed should matter unless it's brought up as an issue.
But...atheists, and agnostics...not 100% sure why they hate Christians so much. If anything, considering Christianity and Satanism are (almost) exact opposites, we should be neck to neck - but aren't.

For me, Panel 2 is the biggest thing for me. I'm agnostic and I'm tolerant of all religions and views but, the same can't be said for me. I had gotten so much hatemail from people that claim I'll burn in hell if I don't convert to their religion. However, I can't stand people who generalize from christians to every religion in between and then some. I'll respect you only as long as you respect me in this case opinion but, the minute you start hating on me, I leave.
You know, some people need to keep their opinions to themselves. I know I say some pretty potentially offensive things, but I try to make sure it's clear that I'm either speaking in terms of hyperbole, or playing sarcastic devil's advocate, but to be so blatantly offensive is just inconsiderate. These people should be mauled.
This is pretty much why I sometimes wonder if I even belong in the furry fandom at all some days. Besides personal issues, I keep wondering when someone's gonna learn who and/or what I am, and start trying to cut me down for it. It can make a guy a little paranoid. But then, much of that may just be my own personal stuff, so I won't blame others for that.
Glad you're willing to stay firm, Gen. Keep the faith.

Hate is hate no matter who it's from or who it's towards. I have had many bad experiences growing up with this. My main concern isn't what group they are because that isn't the issue. The issue I have is with people not the institutions or beliefs they have and how they use the group they are a part of to justify the hatred of another group of people. I am very confused when people use gay or retard to describe something that is stupid. However using fag as an insult I always try to respond with "...why did you call me a cigarette?" I know very well what they meant but instead of responding with equal amounts of hate I try to laugh them away. Some battles with the language they use is difficult to pick up. I mostly come across that on the internet though like TF2 or what not so arguing with someone usually just ends up with a flame war. (While I like flames they keep me nice and warm it doesn't cause any change for the better)
My main argument is first look at how you yourself do things and work on that then try to change others. Jokes about a particular group must be used sparingly because they are often jabbing at a particular stereotype or trait of that group so please be careful with who you say it to. Jokes are fun but they can also be used to hurt another so just use common sense...
Sorry for the rant...

What's sad is a remember seeing those first two posts on twitter/tumblr and it really... really just gave me a bad taste in my mouth. I'll go ahead and admit that -- while I try my best to be accepting of others, no matter what -- in emotionally charged situations, I sometimes get snippy about certain groups due to sour past experiences with those groups. I always regret it afterward, but despite words just being words, sometimes they really can't be taken back... and when I see posts with inflammatory remarks like that, I can't help but shake my head at it, and try to walk away. But perhaps that complacency is part of the problem? Out-of-sight-out-of-mind is a nice concept, but rarely works. I'm also really bothered that, when I do try to bring up some form of personally-perceived injustice on the internet for discussion, close friends of mine will simply tell me that "This is the internet, you [or the person you mentioned] should probably grow thicker skin or just leave" ... I just, really don't know what to say about it besides that that viewpoint fills me with rage and frustration.
On another note, I kind of like how Amber Gaiman responded to that statement against her... I think it really shows the strength of her character, and it sends a pretty decent message that more people should follow... and... I've run out of steam on what to stay. Sorry for the long post.

I can see why
holliehyena speaks so highly of you. Thank you for this page. Just, yes, to all of it. I hope all is going well for you now.

And if you ever confront them on it, they always have 'some reason' why *their* hatreds are justified. My favorite reason for justified hatred was 'They're evil, and it's evil to try to understand evil. Open-mindedness has nothing to do with trying to understand everyone. You only need to understand people who are good."
