Just trying to get back into the swing of painting and to remember what I'd learned, after being away from painting for a bit.
The celestial stag started as an NPC illustration for a Pathfinder game (I was trying to avoid going super-saturated on the colors, and I'm still not sure if that worked okay). Ahuizotl are powerful Aztec water-creatures - the tail-hand is part of the folklore!

They're "water dogs," but northwest coast mythology especially assigns a lot of importance and spiritual association to otters. And there's otter-related stuff in Ireland too I've heard about. So I'm pretty sure this was Aztecs encountering some sort of otters - even if only as mythology from further north or further south.
