Today is September 22, 2012. It was one year ago on this date when Hungarian-born nonagenarian talent Lya Korda passed away...
My only association with her was through meetings of Scrabble Club 276 (from 2003 to 2011) in Lauderhill, Florida. In addition to her skills in the popular board game, she was a long-time member of MENSA (first in New York City from the 1960s on, and then in Broward County, FL - when she'd moved down here in the early 1970s). Her other credits include being an athlete (in Senior Olympic sports 'javelin throwing' and 'shot put'), a fencer, an amateur pilot, a nurse, and a prolific artist. (Back in Hungary, she even received an M.A. in design.)
To remember Ms. Korda on this anniversary of her passing, I had selected one of her earliest cover art images for "Brow-Beat" (Circa July, 1979), with her intricate style of illustrating an anthropomorphic owl (the MENSA mascot), frolicking amongst the flowers. (The banner said owl is holding up reads "Florange 1979" - 'Florange' being a shortened form of the phrase 'Florida Regional Gathering' for MENSA members throughout the 'Sunshine State'.)
When I'd attended her funeral last year, special cards (for all attendees) were distributed. On one side was a full-color photograph of Lya in front of a mural-sized painting (of a South American mountain village) she'd rendered; on the other side was a condensed history of her accomplishments. Here were the last two sentences from said card:
May her journey to another dimension be on the wings of the eagle.
And, in her own words, she: "lived, loved, and left".
