While rummaging through my portfolio of older anthropomorphic artwork, I came across a pencil rough I'd began in 2001, around the time I got to meet artist
Miller J. Sullivan at "AnthroCon 2001" in Philadelphia. He was nice enough to draw his muscular wolf character 'Berios' in my 'BBSB' (Big Black Sketch Book) - formerly, a blank page ledger.
I returned the favor by attempting to render a comic gag (in his own sketch book) with 'Berios', taking a physical examination - with the doctor placing his stethoscope on the wolf's chest, asking him to "inhale", and getting exaggeratedly enveloped in the process!
I had a second comic idea I wanted to draw, but Miller wanted to get other "AC" attendees to draw images for him. So, we eventually parted company...
When I got home to Margate, I still wanted to follow through on said second idea, and started drawing a multi-paneled comic gag with 'Berios' and 'Rob Cat'. My inspiration for the gag came from a trip (earlier that year) to the Coconut Grove portion of Miami - where I saw that the Planet Hollywood in the area was shutting down (due to economic problems). When I saw the establishment's globe icon, I'd pictured a 'muscle furry' carrying it on his back; and the first individual who came to mind was 'Berios'...
However, life got in the way, and a variety of preoccupations kept me from finishing the 'pencil rough' of the comic gag. So, I put it away in my portfolio, where it remained... until I'd found it again, a few weeks ago. But, rather than ink and color it, I'd decided to simply post it in its original penciled format.
I hope you enjoy this classic 'pencil rough', and be sure you check out the other drawings of 'Berios' in my gallery:
