Chapter 3 A Royal Meeting and a Long Trip
The group got off of the train in Canterlot and made their way to the castle. Elemental Fury was recognized by several of the guards, all of whom claimed to have been good chums with him, or at least related to good chums of his. They entered the castle courtyard, and the old unicorn approached a guard.
"I need to speak to Princess Celestia," he said, "Its urgent."
"I'll go see if the princess ca-" the guard was saying.
"Its alright," called a voice from up the stairs, "I've got some time." All present looked up, and standing at the top of the stairs was Princess Celestia, one of the two rulers of Equestria, both loved by their subjects. Everypony bowed as the Princess descended the stairs.
"Guards," she said upon reaching ground-level, "Please wait outside." As the guards left the chamber, she turned to the group.
"Now then," said the white alicorn, "How can I help you?"
"Your majesty," said the sea green unicorn, "We would ask of you transportation, for we are embarking on a long journey."
"Hmhmhm," she giggled, "You don't have to act all formal around me. Just because I'm a princess doesn't mean I can't unwind." She surveyed the group, eyeing up each pony. She hesitated for just a moment on Mooneye, then continued.
'Well,' the rust colored merc thought, 'It looks like she's not worried about last time.'
"Where are you going?" the princess asked.
"Frostvale, princess," Mooneye spoke up, because nopony else knew. The princess drew in a sharp breath.
"We haven't had contact with them in years," she said, seeming a little distant, "Not since the death of their last king. I heard it was sudden. Why do you want to go there?"
"Because their current king is a tyrant," Mooneye said, "He rules his subjects with fear and hatred instead of love and compassion. He brainwashes his soldiers, or something, making them nothing more than machines. The ponies there are afraid to leave their houses for fear of some new law he just thought up." He left out the part about the soldiers who'd killed his mother many moons ago.
"I see," the princess said, eyeing the mercenary pony.
'Maybe she hasn't forgotten last time,' he thought to himself, 'Does she believe me?'
Princess Celestia called the two guards back into the room.
"I want the two of you to help these ponies," she said, nodding her head at the assembled group, "They are going to Frostvale." The guards bowed, and then left to get the carriage.
"Its a very brave thing you five are doing," Princess Celestia complimented, "But before you go, I have a favor to ask." She beckoned them to follow her, as she lead them to her room. There, she began to write a letter.
"Once you overthrow this tyrant, I'd like to re-establish trade with Frostvale," she said, writing as she spoke, "So, my favor is for you to give this letter to the next ruler, that way we can help those poor souls." She gave the letter to Zierra, who put it in her saddlebag.
"It would be our honor, your highness," Elemental Fury said, still showing the princess his utmost respect. The group then left the castle, boarded the carriage, and waited for the trip to end.
Meanwhile, two-hundred miles north, in a village of earth ponies, a young brown-and-orange filly was playing with her friends. They were playing hide-and-seek, and it was her turn to seek.
"...7...8...9...10!" she counted, "Ready or not, here I come!" She started searching for her friends. She searched and she searched, but it looked like her friends had found some really good hiding places. Then, she bumped into a stallion wearing black armor and a blank expression on his face. Looking around, she could see that there were several more that looked exactly like him. She got an uneasy feeling and backed away slowly. When the strange ponies made no attempt to grab her, she started running home.
"Mommy!" she screamed as she found her mother, "There are strange ponies that way!" She pointed in the direction she had come from.
"Its worse, I'm afraid, little one," her mother said, "They are around the entire village. Go into the house and hide. Do not come out unless we come and get you." The young filly nodded, leaving her mother and father standing outside the door and running to hide, remembering a small crawlspace under the floor.
The parents of said filly were approached by a red pegasus pony with purple spots on her.
"Are you the mayor of this village?" she asked, politely.
"I am," the father replied, a little suspicious.
"Oh good," the pegasus replied, "Well, I have orders from my lord that you and your citizens are to submit to him and come with us, or to destroy your village and take you by force." At first the mayor thought she was making a bad attempt at a joke, but then, looking in her fierce and determined eyes, he pushed that thought aside.
"You can't be serious," he said.
"You have ten seconds to comply," she said, ignoring his statement, "Better decide fast." She walked back toward the edge of town.
"I've got to move fast," the mayor said.
"Why are they doing this?" his wife asked.
"I don't know," he replied, "But I have to protect everypony. I'm going to tell them to be ready for a fight." He started running around town, telling everypony to call in their children and prepare for a fight. Declaring war on these ponies was his last act as mayor.
