Panther is not really a proper term, it is a generic term for melanistic felines.
...So if the cat doesn't have a specific species this is okay
...but "panthers" don't really exist and the term is only proper for the comic book character and the Pink Panther.

But when you give a twenty page report on melanism in felines, I'd say you can be pretty confident. ^^
The term panther comes from the genus name Panthera which includes Lions, Tigers, Jaguars, and Leopards.
However melanism can occur throughout the family felidae so it isn't a very accurate term to begin with.
