I used to live and work at a ranch where they had bison (amoungst other exotic ungulates) and the first year I was there I ended up having to bottle raise a bison heifer calf that her mama had abandoned at birth (her first calf). She became quite a pet and got into everything. Eventually we had to put up a few extra gates around the office because she ended up ripping several of the doors right off their hinges when she'd attempt to follow me into the office after she was full grown. She'd tie to a post just fine but once she got bored she'd just walk off and rip the post right out of the ground or break the snap on her lead rope. Even as a 5 year old, when I left, she was still as tame and friendly as a pet goat, even when she her own calf at her side.
dang...wish I could have been there....I would love that...I have considered buying an abandoned calf for just that reason...but don't have any other bison and wonder if he/she would be ok with that....I do have a miniature horse and a large dog, but don't know if they would fill in for the herd or what...
It's been my experience bottle raising a ton of exotic hoovestock that if you can keep them together with similar species bottle babies will do just fine. Keeping a bison calf with a domestic sheep or goat, or a domestic beef or dairy calf or even a miniature horse or pony (as long as they're not aggressive), they'll be quite happy =)
