This is my entry for
teamtf 's competition in the halloween theme.
That night started like any other Halloween. It was dark, a crisp autumn breeze swept through, and wrappers and dropped candies cluttered the street. Every house was already line with children looking for their free candy, every house but one. You see, this house belonged to something no one could comprehend, and they wanted it to stay that way. Not one person has dared to lay a foot on that property since the place was left to rot, but still horrible rumors of this house did not cease. It was on this night, that the traditions were broken by not one, but two, a boy and a girl, dressed as the wolves, and their friends, who lead the town to a night filled with woe, and enjoyment.
"Megan, your so frail. you have to learn to toughen up a bit if you want to have some actual fun tonight. If your too shy to go to the party with us, then were never going to let you live this down. said Bruce
"Don't talk to my girlfriend like that, Bruce, she may be shy, but thats what I love about her." yelled Darryl while holding his girlfriend in his arms.
"You’re so sweet, Darryl. Megan, you picked they right person to be with." said Sarah
"Sure, but I bet that Megan couldn't muster up nearly enough courage to go up to that house, and touch the doorknob. If you can do that, i will never call you frail or shy again. “Said Bruce
"She doesn't have to do this, Bruce, and we will all be fine." said Sarah
"You know I can talk for myself." said Megan "I… I have to prove this for myself, and all of you."
Megan stepped up the curb and faced the house. The tan paint had dried out and began to peal. The porch roof had rotten, and had bits and pieces of it were dangling by only a few fibers. The Overgrown grass had covered the entire walkway to the front porch, but also masked several aged statues. An eerie glow was emerging from both of the upstairs window, some sort of orangey fire it seemed be. The rotted, wooden door with a broken window welcomed all of the visitors who were brave enough to get even there.
Megan found herself paralyzed with fear, and looked around her immobile body. It was Halloween and the four had taken the liberty to dress up for their party. She remembered back at the store where she was looking for something to put on, when Darryl showed up with matching wolf costumes. He gave her one, the wolf with a red bow on its head, and she instantly loved it. Sarah wanted to go as a criminal to keep it obvious, but when she bought a mask, she didn't realize it was part of a full raccoon costume. Though she wanted to go classy, the ears and fluffy tail left a imprint on her. Bruce, on the other hand, ran right in, and came right out with a full eagle costume.
While Megan was daydreaming, she hadn't realized that she was already halfway through the yard. A glint of panic sparkled in her eye, as she looked back to her boyfriend, and their friends. They all gave her a reassuring nod, and Megan began to press onwards. She took one step at a time, but barely making any ground. As she was about four feet from the porch, a sharp noise rang in the background. She had given up, and turned around, but Darryl had come to the rescue. Together, the two walked up to the porch, and victoriously placed their gloved hands on the doorknob. Darryl and Megan turned back to their friends, when something pulled them in through the door.
The two didn't realize what was happening as they were pulled into the building. Dizzying jerk left them both out of focus, and could only hear the dying screams of their friends. They were dropped to the floor somewhere inside of the house's chambers, and left for themselves. Darryl woke up somewhere dusty, and hard. He had no idea where he was, and more importantly no idea where Megan was, he searched in every place he could reach, but no sign of her.
He was boxed inside of a fairly small room, with only a couple boxes and their contents to work with. There was no door, well at least no visible one. Darryl looked desperately for something he could use for escape. He poured the boxes on to the floor, and sifted through them. Old pictures, some clothes, an old bottle, nothing he could have used at all. However, he found one last thing in the pile. He held a little, ornamental box that had dozens of faded pictures or print on it. He tried to open it, but the lid would not move. He thought nothing of it and through it aside, shattering it on the floor. As he continued through the boxes, a small green bulb of light floated from the debris, and towards Darryl.
Megan regained herself in what appeared to be the master bedroom. She looked out the faded window and saw the figures of her two friends outside. She pounded against the glass, but it did not work. She cried for help, but no matter what she did, she couldn't get any help at all. Megan accepted her fate, she was trapped, no one would know she was still alive, and her boyfriend was gone. She lay on the bed, and stared at the ceiling, counting the seconds go by.
From beneath the floor a green light rose, and into the bedroom. Megan did not notice it at all, as it flew around the room, looking for something. Megan let out a depressed yawn, attracting the attention of the light. It floated over to her form, and stalled around the wolf hat of the costume. The light accelerated into the cloth, and merged into it. The sudden entrance startle Megan and she began to feel strange, something was definitely off with her head.
Before she could make the adjustment to her hat, the entire thing fell over her face, and began to suffocate her. It squeezed around her face, and molded itself into her basic features. He body began to fall victim to the furry outfit, surrendering the human form for the costumes. From her dark and airless prison, she could only feel the changes happening, like the conversion to paws, and the tail began to become a new appendage, and it scared her. She finally regained control of her face, as her eyes became the wolf's and her mouth became the wolf's muzzle. Scared and nervous, she hobbled over the mirror to take a better look at herself.
As she looked in horror at her new body, she saw that she was still very similar to her ordinary self. The same height, same figure, even the clothes she wore underneath the costume made it on to her. Though no one could recognize her, the similarities were remarkable. Now she knew that her fate was decided, and she was never going out again. Megan would try to escape, but her old self would never come out. But, then she came to a shocking realization "If this happened to me, what about Darryl!"
"Don't worry about Darryl, he is fine."
"Who said that?" asked Megan
"He has had the same experience as you, and he now has all the benefits as you. Isn't it wonderful to be someone your not. You became a wolf, and I became a person. You see Megan; we are one in the same now. We are Megan the wolf, not Megan and her wolf costume." said the same muzzle
"What!? No! This can't be happening!"
"Its happening, and there is no way to stop it. Just look at yourself, why would you want to stop it. You and your boyfriend are both wolves now, and quite frankly, you are quite sexy as an animal." "Yes, but..." "But what... Do you just want to throw this opportunity out the window, or do you want to bring more opportunities in?"
"What do you mean by that...? What do you mean?" said Megan as she waited for a response. None came, but something more important did. A key for the door in the room was now at her feet. Without questioning herself, she picked up the key and opened the lock. The hallway was not I good condition either; the walls were covered in holes, the paint was peeling, old wires hung from the ceiling, it was not a pretty sight at all, but the wolf pressed forward. She truly had no idea were she was going, but her goal was getting out.
Darryl had just recovered from his sudden transformation. His grogginess had just subsided because of the near suffocation of his mask. He didn't care how he was now, because he only worried for his girlfriend somewhere in the house. He went back to tearing through the boxes, still looking for anything that could get him out. as he was hitting the boxes from side to side, he grew tired, and thought he began to hear things. He took out a few more things "getting closer," even more "almost there" on his final strives of energy "yes, yes just a few more” with one last heave of the box "Yes, this is your way out." Darryl now saw a trap door under his feet.
Megan had made it down the stairs and was looking for the door she was pulled in from. The house seemed to go on forever, but there had to be an end somewhere. Her escape was within her grasp if only she could find the way out. She ran through the aged, dusty, and debris cluttered rooms without realizing that she was being watched. She wandered, through the rooms, half drained of energy, when she saw a light. With a closer look, Megan saw that it was the front door! As she gathered herself to make the last push, a floorboard creaked, and a lamp fell to the floor. Fear filled into he body, as she ran through the door to her friends.
"Megan, what happened!?" shouted Sarah
"It still has him, Sarah, I just don't know where. I'm so afraid." said Megan crying
"But, why are you actually a wolf now, what happened in there." asked Bruce
"I don't know what happened, Darryl is a wolf too, but everything is a blur." she said as Sarah hugged her
"But, if you didn't see Darryl inside how do you know he is a wolf too." asked Bruce
Megan remembered something at that moment "But what... Do you just want to throw this opportunity out the window, or do you want to bring more opportunities in?" She now understood what her costume, well her, said, but it was too late. With a random hiccup, a small bulb of green light floated from her muzzle and into the air. She couldn't move nothing could be done to stop that light from getting her friends; the costume had control of her.
She tried to get a scream passed her lips, but nothing was allowed to come out. Then the light lowered onto Sarah.
e As the light presses itself into to Sarah's temple, an expression of horror appeared on her face. Already had brown fur began to sprout over her entire body, and black rings circled the brown. Her fingers sunk back into her hands, as a pad was forming over the palm. As her arms surrendered to the raccoon's form, her legs snapped back, completely altering her posture, and shifting her to a digitigrade stance like Megan. her mental agony only got worse, as her mask merged with her face, encompassing her eyes in black fur. As the abundance of brown fur came in, her face had to push outward to make room for it. She and her costume were one now, but she didn't know that.
As Sarah completely her grotesque transformation into her costume, Megan became ill at the fact that she ruined one of her friends. She took off running in the opposite direction. She wanted to be far away from people as she could, especially on Halloween. Megan ran off into the forest, where she could be alone, were no one would have to be changed by her. As Megan was running, she could hear shouts from behind her, telling her to stop, but Megan kept on running. Were she was to stop, not even she knew, but according to Megan, the farther was the better.
As she was running through the woods, her costume came to life again, and began to talk with her; "What are you running from, this is who you are, what you were made to be. Can't you see that this is what your life is now, it’s so you can make things better, whether you like it or not." "No, i refuse to have any more people suffer the same fate as me; no one is going to be merged with a costume like you." "Yes, but don't forget about Sarah. She might not have the same perspective as you; she might have already taken Bruce as an eagle." "Shut up! Sarah would never do such a thing." "She might not, but i know for a fact that her costume will." Megan couldn't take it anymore, and she fell to the forest floor in a tearful rage.
Megan was expecting her costume to follow up with another insult, but it let go of its life for now. She looked up, to see that she was lost, the way she wanted it to be. Megan was finally away from others, but still never alone. Though Megan was right were she needed to be, her depression would never leave, not as long as she was always with another. She sat upon a dead tree, and worried about Bruce, Sarah, but most importantly Darryl. With the crisis she was living through, she completely forgot to save her boyfriend. What good was she, not to her friends, not to her boyfriend, and not to herself? She felt that the only one around her was her costume.
Drenched with her own tears, Megan found herself hallucinating. She saw Darryl, human Darryl, coming from behind the trees to comfort her. She backed away, but he still came forward with open arms. Megan pressed herself up against the tree, trying to keep her distance from her boyfriend, when, his two arms wrapped around her. She was swept with emotions of content and dependency, as the warmth filled her body. The hug stopped, and Darryl stepped back, but he was a wolf now. Megan began to cry to herself again, as Darryl calmly said her name. He repeated it over and over again, until she opened her eyes.
It was Sarah. Standing a few feet away from Megan, the raccoon looked at her with compassion. "Megan, don't worry. I am not mad, just a little bit confused. Calm down, so we can talk this over." she said
"Okay." Megan said, wiping the tears from her eyes "It’s just that, I don't know what to do. I am so lost right now, and I can’t even help Darryl anymore. He is still probably trapped in the house, scared, and confused. I bet that he is trying to save me as we speak, but I didn't even look for him. And now I turned you into a raccoon. My life is just falling to ruins."
"Life is what you make of it Megan, it may not be wise for us to go back into the city and risk more people, but there has to be something that we can do. Anything at all, to make our lives normal again, like a cure from this." said Sarah
"I hope there is, and if it is there, I will find it."
"Fool, there is no cure from this. When you released that green light, it was your life energy. In reality you are living inside of me, because you sacrificed your own to give life to the raccoon. There is no way that you are ever going to get it back, because I control you. I have been generous with letting you call our moves, but if you try to separate yourself from me, that will all change." said Megan's costume.
Both Megan and Sarah had a very solemn expression on their faces, after the news they just received. Megan had now given up the sliver of hope that Sarah just gave her. Sarah struggled to think of a resolution, or even a bright side to her situation. Megan thought for Sarah and how she still had her life force, so Sarah still had hopes. However, that all changed when Bruce came through the woods, stripped of his eagle costume, and now wandering around with a t-shirt and a pair of shorts.
Darryl had managed to fit himself through the trap door, and lower himself onto the thin platform. Most of the room was pitch black, or empty, however there was one area that stood out in particular. A single torch, burning on only a few embers, was suspended from the ceiling. As he moved closer, he saw that wineglass, filled with a orange substance, was reflecting the illumination. As he came even closer, Darryl noticed that a small red ruby was embedded inside of the handle. The display was tempting, but he held his priorities much higher. However, something in his head kept telling him to drink it. No matter how much he tried to forget it, the temptation urged him on. Before he knew it, he was raising the glass to his mouth.
"Bruce, why did you follow us here? Go away quickly unless you want to become one of us." Said Sarah
"No, I should be okay; I left my costume back at the house. I can't get caught by it now." said Bruce
"I don’t care! I'm a freak, and I don't want any more people ending up like me. If i knew that earlier, I would have never came out of the house, never abandoned Darryl, never brought Sarah into this, but I never want to make that mistake again. Just go away Bruce, leave me alone. Sarah may think differently, but i do not want anything to happen to you or anyone else!" shouted Megan
"No, I am not leaving you two. I can't leave knowing that some of my best friends are trapped in new bodies, afraid of people. I won't leave you two, and there is nothing you can do to stop me." said Bruce triumphantly
"Bruce please. The only way you can help is by leaving us alone. No one should end up like this, we didn't do anything wrong, just we had bad luck. It’s not punishment, its torture. If you can't understand that, we can't say anything else." said Megan.
However, while Megan was fearing for Bruce, she noticed that there was something horrible wrong with Sarah. She was hunched over, gasping for air. She was being starved of oxygen, and was getting worse. Bruce ran over, as Megan was trying to keep her breathing. Megan gave a confused look to Bruce, but he returned one of determination. They pressed on her gut and chest to keep her blood flowing and her airways clear. They tried everything they could on Sarah, but even after she fainted from air deprivation, they continued. Hope was being lost for her, and the two were easing up, when Megan was hit with the same thing.
She quickly lost consciousness, and Bruce was left with two motionless bodies. He was overwhelmed with horror, as his friends did nothing. He was about to loose himself, when Sarah's body began to twitch. His hope regained for a fraction of a second, before returning to disgust. A simple rubbery lump crawled out from Sarah's chest, and began to crawl up her body, passed her shoulders and on to her face. The lump of rubber then made its way into Sarah's nose and pushed its way in, disappearing from his sight. Bruce was so captivated from this, that he didn't notice that the same was happening to Megan.
Darryl couldn't stop himself from drinking the substance, but the more he did, the more carefree he felt. That drink seemed to last for minutes before it bottomed-out and Darryl felt incredibly dizzy. He was quickly loosing himself, as he spun, and listening to a soothing voice. "Don't worry, that feeling will not leave you. Just let yourself go, you and you friends will be just fine." As the speech finished, Darryl blacked out.
Bruce was backing away gently, as his two friends got up from their ordeals. There was something not quite right about them. Megan and Sarah had a desiring look in there eyes, lusty even, They wanted something more from Bruce, so he took off back into the forest. He ran as fast as he could, as far as he could, away from those two. The horrible images of the rubbery lump filled his mind as he hopped over logs, and dodged branches.
"You said you would never leave us Bruce." You said that you wouldn't be able to live with yourself." "If you stay, you will never have to be alone again." "We're fine Bruce, just come back." As he was running, more calls for him came, and continued. By the sounds of their voices, they were pursuing him, and they were right behind him. He was nervous, fearful, graven even. He couldn't find a word for how afraid he was, but he knew that he had to get out of there.
He had been chased by Megan and Sarah for who knows how long now, but obviously he was getting tired. With his exhaustion, Bruce also grew very desperate, so he began to make turns through the woods, thinking that if he was lost, that the others couldn't find him either. He made a sharp left, hopefully evading his pursuers, but there was no way to be sure, so he kept running. He strived to make it out of the woods, and his victory was easily in sight, for he could see a light coming though the trees. He was almost out of the woods, and with a few more steps, he would be out.
He made one last push to get to the asphalt instead of the soil, but he wasn't greeted by roads and sidewalks. Bruce gave up all hope as he found that he was in the backyard of the one house that started all of this. He still kept going, because if he could get through the house, he would be a free man. He walked up to the porch, grabbed the handle, and sprinted through. He made a mad dash through the inner workings of the house, trying to keep some sort of a cool head, and he prevailed when he found the front door, or it would have been, except for the fact that Darryl was blocking his way.
He turned to run back, but it was too late. Darryl had already seen him, and came. Before he knew it, the wolf had him pinned to the floor, and two more were coming through the front door. Bruce's run of luck had depleted, and there was no way of getting out of his predicament. They had him in for it, and there was going to be no good ending. The three were laughing, as a rubbery lump began crawling up his leg.
Bruce was terrified as the lump if rubber made its progress up his leg, and kept coming. It all happened in slow motion, ages passed as the lump came up to his crotch, his chest, and finally his face. When it began to push up his nose, Bruce sputtered, and screamed. The agony he was in was nothing to be compared to, and the lump progressed farther, and farther, settling somewhere inside of his head, and taking the infectious bite into his brain.
Bruce began to rapidly change, sprouting feathers along his entire body, piercing through his clothes. His shoes were torn through, because his feet reemerged as talons, orange, rough, eagle's talons. His hands and arms, were slimming down, and growing extra lengths of feathers, for the formation of wings. His mouth began to harden, and push out into an orange beak, as his face violently malformed. His eyes were much more acute, his ears were melded inside his head, and any recognition of Bruce was gone, along with all that he once was.
Everyone’s lives were gone. Their memories, their control, themselves; nothing left of the people we once called Darryl, Bruce, Megan, and Sarah. Only their costumes are living now, and are trying to take more into their ideas of contentment. I’m sure that the whole town will be gone by the end of the night.
Ah... Halloween nights, they always bring me so much joy and entertainment. They may have started the day so normal, but what fun is that. Humans are such interactive creatures, but don't worry, they are all together again. Their costumes may have taken over all that they were, but they had to go someplace. Darryl and Megan are finally back together, and we might see what happens to Bruce and Sarah, but I can’t force that in jack-o-lanterns. Nor can I tell if they are actually happy in there, I can't talk to pumpkins. Heck, I shouldn't even be talking, but this is Halloween, nothing is normal. I hope you enjoyed my tale people, but now I must get back to shining in the night. Even the moon has to be out of place every so often. Good bye.

That night started like any other Halloween. It was dark, a crisp autumn breeze swept through, and wrappers and dropped candies cluttered the street.
Good bye.
