This picture was somewhat of a lucky shot. I heard the motorcyclist coming and I hit the shutter... but the camera has a small bit of shutter-lag (when I was trying to take pictures in Tulsa at the drag strip, I never managed to actually catch a car in frame). Nailing the motorcyclist was great, and it's clean too, like time was frozen. If I could ask for one thing, it might be the exposure being lighter, but I'll take what I can get.
There are a lot of motorcyclists on this stretch of CA-2, aka Angeles Crest Highway. And for good reason: Lots of twists, turns, elevation changes. Unfortunately, there is a far-too-high number of riders who enter on a motorcycle and leave in a helecopter. This point was driven home on this drive when we came around a corner to find emergency forestry personnel on the highway. I saw a motorcycle parked at the side and feared for the worst. As we slowly rolled by (waved on by some of the workers), I saw a dusty red motorcycle upright, and EMTs crouched over a rider flat on his back, helmet still on his head. The EMTs didn't seem too animated, so I'm hoping the rider's injuries were not serious. But it was a sobering moment on our mountain highway joyride.
I've personally felt the wrath of ACH on my old bike, when I ran wide in a corner and dumped it into the soft dirt. Luckily it was low-speed and I walked away from that with nothing more than sore muscles for the next week.
