This is primarily for someone who noted me about the H-scale some time ago *you know who you are* but if anyone else finds it useful, thats cool too. I tried quickly to illustrate the idea so the colorsketch is fast and crappy (aka very shoddy scrap material). My H-scale shows a way to think of character design and degrees of androgyny in herm characters: As by their very nature, ALL realistic hermaphrodites are androgynous to some degree.
Basically there is a natural range of body types between male and female poles, thats where the fun and challenges of hermaphrodite characters are. Though it's a spectrum, I generally think of 5 steps between for simplicity, and used 5 characters that are closest to those steps. 1 being mostly female, and 5 mostly male. 3 is a perfect balance between the two, and the other two are natural steps in either direction. 0 is entirely female and 6 entirely male, and not relevant whatsoever. This is about basic structure, and doesn't factor in breast size, build thickness or amount of body fat. Those three things can also dramatically alter the appearance of the character regardless of what sex it is.
The ones closer to 1 would have wider hips, lower muscle mass, narrower waist and shoulders characteristic of females. Those closer to 5 would have wider shoulders/ribcage, sturdier frames, and more developed musculature like males. 3 is the most ideal and indicates perfect balance.
My examples:
1- Viv (urial). Almost entirely female structure. Lets say 95% female visually. Strong curves and large breasts. Male horns and coloration. Curvy frame.
2- Noss (fossa). More female than male. Female base, wider shoulders, deeper voice and more muscle mass. Still retains feminine curves and large breasts. Moderately athletic frame.
3- Parrey (bat). The most balanced position on the scale. Perfectly androgynous. Ideally this spot is 50/50, but Parrey is more male in structure. around 60/40, plus he has very small breasts (nearly flat chested) which make him even more boyish looking. Wiry frame.
4- Thaylo (thylacoleo). This spot denotes a much more male than female structure. I favor this build usually. probably 25% female /75% male. Male base with some modifications: medium/small breasts, smoother curves, and a bit wider hips. Musculature, limbs, voice, shoulders identical to male. Athletic frame.
5- Dheran (wallaby). Overall male appearance. Probably 85% for this character. A bit wider hips and a pouch seal the deal. Male chest and slim frame.

Very interesting scale. It does look like this is more of a general guideline, with differences between species and individuals making it difficult to have any definite criteria, but this is still very useful nevertheless. At least now we have a better idea of what to expect from your herm characters and the variety they come in.
That it does, and I hope this scale will be a useful resource for others.
One question, though. Are all of these degrees on the H-scale (save 0 and 6, of course) involve the individual having both sets of reproductive organs, or could an individual on the 1 or 5 degrees be for the most part female/male, just with a few other physical characteristics that are normally found in the other sex?

They all have to have both male and female reproductive organs to even be considered a hermaphrodite, that is naturally assumed, as that is the definition of the term hermaphrodite. This only covers general body structure, but all function as both male and female reproductively, perhaps to differing degrees based on individual situations.
Gotcha, just wanted to make that part clear. It seems then that there might be 0.5 and 5.5 degrees on the scale, where the individual is fully male or female, but have some characteristics of the other sex, blurring the distinction just a tiny bit. Of course, that's just my overanalytical mind at work, but any art that gets that part of my brain working is good art in my book.
I know you've heard this before, but you make herm characters cool :P What I'm about to say may piss a lot of people off, but I am so, so, so very sick of the purely fetishest takes on herm characters that are *everywhere* in this fandom--you know, the furry version of futa, basically. There's nothing wrong with that but I think calling them herms is a little misleading, when in all reality they're dickgirls, or, occassionally, cuntboys or whatever you want to call them. Swapping crotches does not a herm make.
I guess I just enjoy seeing a lot of thought put into someone's craft, no matter what it may be. I've never enjoyed the futa scene and up until finding your work, I'd yet to see anything herm related that appealed to me. But this is an intelligent take on the subject matter, realistic in its execution, believable, and thought provoking. Thank you.

I agree entirely. People use the specific sex 'herm' to tag many irrelevant subjects. I do not draw herms for sexual reasons, but for the artistic challenge and personal expression. It is much more challenging to me to draw an androgynous character than a simply male or female one. After you draw those enough, they can get boring. I consider/respect hermaphrodites the same as any other sex, with personalities, unique points etc, and do not appreciate them being objectified solely as sex objects, that is plain stupid and ruins their reputation.
Hah... you know, as a writer, I don't think I'll be ready to venture out into your territory any time even remotely soon. I may want to try someday, but for now, I'll pass. It can be difficult enough crafting deep, believable characters without muddling with physical sex. I understand what you mean, though, and I admit it would be pretty interesting to have a handful of middlesex characters, depending on the context--are they in a world like our own, wherein such a thing would be considered bizarre and freakish, or in a society where such things are common knowledge and accepted? The implications and the personalities wrought by them would vary so very much by context, as would those of every "0" and "6" in relation to them. Oy veh, I'm going to wind up with yet another little world in my brain.
On the topic of reputation, I have to note: Yes, you're completely right, but remember that this is the furry fandom we're talking about. It's like the Florida of reputation. It comes here to die.
P.S. Added you to AIM but you ain't nevah on, yo. S'up wit dat? Fuzzlin' fo sho, yo. Cuss cuss, etc., insert grammatically incorrect inquiry relating to instant messengers here.

All around, very informative and definately creative as well.
I love everything, but as far as little details go, I love the color coding that you gave to their bracelets and little markings on their speedos. :3
And part of our discussion on the urials a few days ago, Viv is lookin pretty cute ^^

faving this for a refrence, scrap or no scrap. this is the first time I've seen someone bother with this kind of thing.
I do have a "hidden" herm character myself, the equivelant of an H5, who drops at least one level during Pregnancy (see latest submission of mine for one of the results ;) )
