Isn't it just Murrtacular? Murtal is a fun game, I have dumb opinions about it.
*I made it bloo cause I like that color, huff >:C
This was my recent post to a forum concerning the story.
Spoilers.
No one else has pointed this out so I shall:
We are all pretty much in agreement that this facility is hard to find. Most likely this was originally to keep Black Mesa(who was already kicking Aperture Science's(AS for short) financial butt because they were being awarded a huge amount of no-bid contracts) for discovering the facility, right? AS couldn't foresee the portal storm or the coming on the Combine.
This makes me wonder: If this is a secret facility which appears to be some distance from any major metropolis(pure conjecture I know, but it would make sense) then why would they suddenly have a "Bring Your Daughter to Work" day? That is a policy for regular businesses, not secret research facilities.
Now, the information on the AS website stays GlaDOS was activated during the "Bring Your Daughter to Work" day.. but I wonder.
If GlaDOS is a genetic computer, and she has some small connection to the AS facility computer network, could she have somehow started a memo suggesting a "Bring Your Daughter to Work" day? The facility was(possibly) all female and perhaps this would have been considered a nice gesture considering how bad things were going at the time(Projected levels of GSA[Government Subsidy Aquisitions?] were massively optimistic to the point of idiocy, considering AS was able to accurately assume the levels Black Mesa would receive.)
One the proposal to have a "Bring Your Daughter to Work" day was accepted, GlaDOS could suggest to have herself scheduled to be "brought online" as in connected fully to the Enrichment Center's computer systems at the same time(maybe even suggest it in this possible memo as a "Special Event.") This way GlaDOS could stage her takeover at a time when she would also be able to 'aquire' test subjects at a younger, more malleable age(Also, they would have no previous experience with Portal technology and thus would not be able to 'cheat' by knowing the device from a research standpoint.)
Obviously she didn't succeed, fully at least. The morality core* was installed and prevented the release of deadly neurotoxins. I honestly think the reason the research facility was abandoned was the Combine invasion. The big reason I think this is that there are rooms that are dirty and 'lived in/abandoned' but there are no bodies, or traces of bodies, or anything. If GlaDOS could remove corpses and all traces of them then she could also tidy up the boardrooms and offices(judging by the little 'nests' hidden in levels, she probably can't get cleaning arms/drones/probes outside of certain areas.) But.. perhaps when the neurotoxin was being released(pre-morality core) GlaDOS was able to quarantine and force some of the daughters into the relaxation vaults for later 'testing'.
I know that is a long and complicated theory of where Chell came from(as to the problem with Chell's age.. does a woman stop being a 'daughter' when she turns 18?) but it would be such a downer if she was just some idiot who signed up to be a part-time Portal research subject(Like you can sign up on the website)
*Why is her morality core also mingled with the missle control systems? Did GlaDOS design the missle system after she had already had the morality core installed? Perhaps she just needed space to store the missle control program and the Morality Core(being a quick-fix which couldn't even speak) was the only core with enough spare space?

Oh o.o.. Yeah GlaDOS is sick like that.
PS: Do you think all those Cores at the end were GlaDOS cores? I don't think so.. I think they were backups of something else(They are all the same color, which doesn't mesh with the different GlaDOS cores.. maybe they are the brain backups of everyone who failed the test?.. they all got cake afterall.)
Unless maybe those are the 'system critical' cores.. I mean come on, How does losing her curiosity, anger, and cake mix destroy her?
PPS: I can't remember where I read this.. but doesn't it say somewhere that the reason GlaDOS went nuts is because someone said "Hey lets put a cake recipe in the new genetic computer?"
PPPS: And while you're dead I will be still alive.

It doesn't say that anywhere in the game. It sounds like a theory come up from fans to me. If there's actual proof (sound files, textures) then sure, we'll go with that! I think it was left in as nothing more than a joke. A genetic computer would, in theory, operate on a much higher plane than an electronic one, but I don't even recall there being much evidence that Glados was one? .. Oh it's in her name! Well, I would imagine that each core was simply an emotional component to the genetic whole. Perhaps the actual or backup of GLaDOS is on the Borealis which we'll probably have to destroy or use in HL2:Episode 3 since it was mentioned but never visited in HL2: Episode 2. I fully expect Portal cameos/appearances in HL2:Ep3.
Um. Ok. So The portal test chambers. They all seemed like, when you go behind scenes and even in the actual chambers, they could be EASILY RECONFIGURED by the pistons that each wall section was set upon. There is evidence that the cores were added onto GLaDOS because she mentioned that 'they installed a morality core so I would stop...' So, the original GLaDOS was maybe operating on pure logic and thought "to keep the area clean, remove biological.." or something. So they added more parts of personality based on the original glados persona? Just that each one was emphasized.. And of course the Morality Core seemed like it was faulty and that the 'anger' core was probably the actual problem. It seemed very rage-like and.. well. Like a virus? Genetic computer virus or mental disorder. Perhaps the cake thing was uh. File corruption. Maybe it was the actual problem, just some memory that got written incorrectly and confused poor glados.
I'm not sure what caused Gladdos to explode after losing parts of her personality that, to me, pretty much looked like self-sustaining parts anyway. It certainly wasn't the missiles that destroyed her since you shot her several times with it.
I wouldn't invest a great deal of thought into it because you begin finding meaning where there wasn't any put there by the author.
What blew up GLaDDOS:
Losing key components causing electronic confusion and a chain reaction. (not really plausible??)
The neuro toxin ignited! (no)
Missiles actually caused critical damage (no; It wasn't until after you destroyed the last personality core that GLaDOS blew up)
What did the explosion look like? It looked magnetic or gravitational, frankly. Something as huge and cumbersome as GLaDOS would've fallen to the ground. Perhaps GLaDOS also housed some sort of power core because the facility itself appears to begin exploding as well.
Maybe the song "Still Alive" isn't a lie. Maybe the ASCII artwork playing during the song implies that she is backed up electronically somewhere (like on the Borealis).
Perhaps she could have used the Portal technology she helped make and sung about to warp herself to the Borealis or recover the Borealis. It is a guess, but I would imagine that Portal takes place During or Shortly After the Black Mesa Disaster in HL1.
If the gameplay elements are more than just gameplay elements (the writing on the walls for example.. who wrote it there? SPECIFICALLY: the hints showing you where to go after breaking out of the main chambers... Then what the entirety of the game was, to me, was a test. From start to GlaDOS-explosion.
If GLaDOS is Still Alive, then maybe her original or her copy is onboard the Borealis and was overseeing the entire experiment. Maybe in her calculations decided that the only way to find someone who was fit to use the Portal gun effectively was the one that would actually survive all these tests. There's no use in giving it up to someone who couldn't even survive her testing, to find someone who would question everything and fight anything to live, unlike the people who left their insane messages on parts of the chambers they hid from, waiting for rescue, writing 'the cake is a lie' and apparently starving to death. Maybe doing a clean sweep of the entire area with aimed energy pellets for test subjects who gave up; explaining the lack of mortal remains!
So, I think GLaDOS is onboard the Borealis, was the first Portal experiment ever and came back after receiving the data that a subject had succeeded? or something? She turned Aperture Science Center on its head and used it as her own cage of rats for the Portal gun she helped engineer. :x) So that's what I think...

There is a theory making the loops.. well two theories that intermingle a bit.
Chell was a copy/clone/'android'(gynoid?) specifically copy 004(The number on her portal gun.) Three earlier, less advanced copies of her were sent through the tests(Possibly they weren't copies, just girls without the leg-attachments which, to be honest, are the only reason that the tests were simple.. falling damage would have been a big challenge to overcome in Portal)
As these earlier copies(girls?) made it through the test they made nests which GlaDOS could not get into(The first one seems jury-rigged/forced opened using storage cubes.) These spots have long marks on the wall marking days or perhaps hours spent in these areas. Even if it was hours(I'm inclined to think days judging from the evidence of sustained living in some areas) it was still alot harder and slower going for the previous test subjects.
Also it looks like the nests might be the places where earlier subjects just "Snapped".. the first time you meet a turret(honestly I think I might go a tad loopy if a turret was that polite to me), the spot where you had to destroy companion cube(Is there only one cube that she keeps recycling, or does she churn out more?).. also there is evidence in the companion cube room that the previous subject retreated after destroying her cube.. although I wonder if she destroyed the cube into her nest before or after she collected all the cameras.. just something else to think about. And right after the 'escape'...
Actually it looks like the previous Chell(003) got almost all the way to GlaDOS, is not all the way into the GlaDOS room(or maybe not.. she might not have made it to the missle-launcher room.. depends if GlaDOS can replace glass... wait where there marks on the wall after the missle room? My mind is drifty..)
Also as to Chell being some kind of automaton.. she recovers from damage incredibly well(There is a way to hack a healthbar and apparently it /is/ damage being regenerated, not just negated.. as in it counts back up after damage stops).. do you think the other test subjects had this ability?.. Maybe the first test subject was a human.. and was killed by her first fall.. the second was a construct and did better but still sustained damage and slowly fell apart from falls and turret attacks and such.. the third had regeneration but did the test very slowly because of how much damage she was taking along the way.. and was destroyed by GlaDOS while trying to destroy her, probably unable to recover fast enough during the fight.. which led to Chell.
I think it's fair to say Chell passed every test, including the last one(which was probably a test set up by our mutual friend GlaD)
But I wonder if the event that teleported the Borealis was an effect of Chells success? GlaDOS is hiding from the combine, it's obvious of that, she can keep the combine out of the facility but she can't fight them. Maybe there is something on the Borealis that GlaD knows will be able to defeat the Combine, but she can't get to it on her own.. she needs a worthy champion, one who is quick, smart, and has the ability to connect two objects using a handheld portal device. :3 Perhaps she moved the Borealis as the first step in releasing her champion into the playing field? It was stated in an interview that Chell is going to persist beyond this game, and get connected to the main story somehow.
as I said to Xen: "My guess is Chell is going to be a 'sidekick' in the next game(considering how much work they put into sidekicks in Episode Two.) It'll be less gamebreaking than giving you a portal gun, but you still get some of the neat physics and tricks of portals."
Also I think it would be cooler in Halflife2 is the enemy got the portal guns instead of you.. it'd make things alot more spooky huh?

Heh, the cake thing was orginally just a silly joke the developers had. They tried to come up with something deep and philosophical but winded up with the cake thing ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_(video_game)#Development )
What about that eerie thing glAd says about "you're not a good person, good people don't end up here".
I just assumed that the whole portal thing was a scheme to train convicts for war... Ehn. Maybe I should actually play half life one of these days.
*pause*
AHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHAH

I dunno alot of the final fight was hard to tell if GlaDOS was being serious or not. In that same fight she tells you your permanent file lists you as "Unlikeable, liked by no one" and "a loser" all "very formal."
I think she was just insulting you, knowing she was being destroyed.
Also you should get a GFC converter so you can listen to all the sound files.. GlaDOS has some aweshum babble during that fight that you miss if you kill her too fast.. stuff about using a laser to draw a line in the middle of the facility and sharing it with you.

my explanation would be that most people died in the deadly neurotoxins incident save for a few that managed to install the morality core.and that chell was maybe one of them and just suffered memory loss along with the other (adversary effects of deadly neurotoxins maybe)...the GlaDOS kept running experiments etx

Also yeah, I wonder if the creators had a huge serious storyline or if they just dicked this together as an excuse for the game. All in all the story is just enough to keep this from being completely generic.. Narbacular drop had a shitty story too :3

Actually.. I read this on another forum..
During an interview they said that Chell(Portal Girl) is going to be a part of the story in Episode 3(I didn't play much of HalfLife2 yet but I have read most of the story. :3 )

It even seems like Valve got obsessed with the side-kick thing since Episode 1 xD. They thought they didn't do it enough in first HL2, and it shows... most of Episode 1 and most of Episode 2 (still only halfways though) always involves having a sidekick following you around. xD
I thought they were all cute myself, even the growly Anger Core.
Also the end fight isn't really sposed to be hard, the time limit isn't too bad. It's honestly just a way to play with portals after finishing the game. I actually got the "Terminal Velocity" Achievement by letting myself fall in the very low ceiling area that you are in when you first walk into the final area, so I could listen to GlaDOS while I did it. :3

I just assumed Chell being someone who lost her memory during hibernation for a really long time.
...that's what I kinda assumed when I started the game at least. Felt a little bit like Cave story for me.
Also hope you weren't freaked out by me adding you from nowhere on Steam the other day, under another name hahaha.

GlaDOS is a intresting computer nevertheless, and I actually wondered if it wasn't really that evil... just obsessed about finishing it's goals and purposes (like the computer in the movie Colossus). Then, the red aggressive core kinda messes up that theory for me. xD
It's funny too, as the name GlaDOS would also suggest that it have orgins in the 80's, where every other operating systems was called DOS. I think there's info somewhere that would suggest it, and even a small note somewhere where the employers are complaining about using "twenty year old equipment" (that funnily, looks like modern Macintosh computers).

Lots of fun stuff called DOS, mostly from the 80's. XD Which is a very typical thing of programmers, we are bad at coming up with names. XD

They mention 20 year old equipment at the aperturescience.com website. If you type in "thecakeisalie" I believe, it brings you to a memo someone typed complaining, and includes a way to view the 'relaxtion chamber' which has no doors.
Also there is a budget sheet which mentions a high amount of usage on flour.

You do realise Portal is just a mod for Half Life 2?
Even if it has a funny story it's not polished to the finest detail, so there can still be room for changes...
I even heard theories of Chell being related to Alyx.
The "bring your daughter to work day" is just a funny gag I think.. nothing more. I could be wrong though.

My theory was that someone managed to get out of the complex before Chell, and did all those writings.
So yes, the whole complex is made for testing...
btw. do you fell it's kind of similar to the movie Cube?
As for GlaDOS blowing up... gameplay element >.>
Shesh do you realy belive they put much thought into this "minigame" for Half-Life 2?

Well.
It may be a minigame, but it is going to be incorporated into the main story.
The story was partly done by the Half-life2 creators, because it is going to join the main story, and partly by the team who did the original 'portal' Narbacular drop.
There are theories for Chell being related to Alyx, especially since every keyboard in the game flashes the lettered needed to spell his name in glowing orange, which is an odd coincidence... Alyx was also mentioned in some interview as well.
I don't know if they escaped. I think the only way out GlaDOS left may have been destroying her. Especially since none of the others were as good with portals as Chell(There was /someone/ stuck in the turret room for DAYS and that doesn't even require a single jump..)
Just calling it a 'minigame' is understating it, it's a microcosm of HalfLife2. But if you don't think it's interesting kindly go somewhere else because I do believe this is going to be important to the future of HalfLife. :3

Don't get me wrong, it's interesting, and yes it will be in Episode 3 very likely.
However I just wanted to say that Portal, as a game, isn't as detailed as the rest of Half Life 2, story wise, in a sense that there might be errors or loose ends.
eg. the storage room with those GlaDOS parts.
and the cake...

There's a reason why the game isn't detailed graphically or story-wise. At first the enviroment was apparently detailed, and a bit gritty like Half life 2, but this confused some users. The gritty parts of the game comes later, when most users probably have gotten used to the idea of portals and stuff.
I saw the storage room thing as mostly symbolic than anything. That's it's not really happening or something, oh well. I can't see it becoming a problem for future story, infact portal seems open on purpose so the developers have the freedom to expand it in whatever ways they like.
At least it will be intresting to see what's in Episode 3. I heard they was thinking of including some stuff related to Portal in Episode 2.
