Back when I worked at Toys R Us I was often tasked with checking the shelves to be sure everything had a price clearly displayed. I would hand the scanner gun low on my leg so my hand naturally fell on it when I dropped my arm. One of my coworkers would say "Ed wears the prive gun, like Han Solo"
Today is my birthday, and I want my birthday wish to be for you to have a great day today.
I want it to be happy, and carefree, and full of good friends and food. Away from all the sadness that hides just behind your steps when you walk with others.
I know I hurt you and I know I hurt you bad. I know just how badly I hurt you because I've been there too and I know the fear and confusion of being broken. I know the hollow clenching in your chest that aches and makes your anger chase away the sadness and makes you stronger and harder. I know you've hardened to me, and I'll never get back what we had. So I want you to forget the aches and the pains, I want the loneliness to spread thin under the weight of your loved ones admiration and affection poured over you, and I want you to keep running as fast as you can until your wings beat and lift you up farther than the sun stretches and into the greatest happiness a person can ever find in life.
I want today to be a great day for you, because I owe you so much more than anything I could ever give and will never be able to have the chance to pay you back again. I want my birthday wish to come true because you once gave me the greatest gift of all: your love. And I want the world to pay my debt back to you in my stead tenfold.
