Actually you are close. They are made from the inner tree rings of a hundred year old pine that was eaten by beetles.

Great use of material! I was taught the idea of how to do inserts over the summer, but haven't done any myself yet. Still, this is probably the coolest use of the technique I've ever seen.

Interesting , I like the dragon over all , but I'm not sure about the wings . Very interesting effect though .

Not quite the effect I was going for either.
But experimentation can lead to some interesting effects - tho not always what you wnat

Chuckle , one time someone was checking out one of my carving's and " Oh this is cool but the made a mistake here " . Needless to say the " cool " part was a mistake and the " mistake " was done on purpose . The law of unintended results . Still , I think someone will really like your dragon .
