So, I've made the decision to pick up a corn snake sometime in the not too distant future. I FINALLY took the old aquarium out of the crate and set it up in the living room. I like the way it ends up looking in the room, and I think it will be a nice addition. I think it would look good with a real snake as large as the "plush: one in there now, but, alas, I expect a much smaller slithery thing, at least initially.
I'll be cleaning it out this week, trying to remove the corner overflow canister, building a new top and installing lights, undertank heaters, and a controller for the lights and heat; given that the room can get cold in the winter, I've ordered a variable level heat/light controller to make sure the little reptile stays nice and comfortable.
I'm mainly looking at corn snakes now, but am certainly open for input still. There's an expo locally next weekend I'll be heading down to, as well.

Terrariums usually have holes in the lower area to allow for air circulation, and while I'm not sure if they're an absolute must for all species, I think it'd be a good idea to research if making some is needed if you use an aquarium as a terrarium. :)
I hope you have lots of good times with your corn snake!

This one is botton-drilled already, as it was set up for under-tank water circulation. In fact, back when it was an aquarium, the space in that stand was entirely taken up by a sump tank and large bio-filtration system. (Basically, for those interested in fishies, it used the Berlin method, more or less, with a big skimmer and mechanical filtration.)
I can certainly route those openings so it has plenty of area for air to circulate. In fact, the same bottom diffuser you use on aquariums may well work under the substrate here, for that reason. It's something to think about, and I may well go that route. Should be easy to do, and give him a good bit of fresh air.
