This soft sculpture of a tardigrade, also known as a water bear or moss piglet, was made from wool by the time-consuming process of needle felting, where I poke the fiber repeatedly with a barbed needle to form the shape.
He has eight legs and wonderful toes, four on each foot. In real life, water bears are 1.5 millimeters at largest, but this one is 15 cm (about 6 in) long and 10 cm (about 4 in) wide.
Water bears are notorious for their indestructability. They can survive extreme temperatures from near absolute zero up to 151 degrees Celsius. They can survive ten years without water in dried-up state, then re-hydrate and waddle around some more. They can survive huge doses of radiation and even the vacuum of outer space. Plus, they are super duper cute.
