"Jolly" Jean-Pierre Jarbeaux is the only French member of the Stormborn crew. Born in Marseille with a black coat, he was raised around superstitious people, who called him a witch cat. It all got worse when he went to sea to become a pirate - surrounded by pirates who thought of him as a lover of the sea-hag.
On the Stormborn he became a boatswain by his wits and his schemes - Jean is a lazy bone and tries to avoid hard labour on any given location. On the other hand he is smart and well-educated, and possibly the one with the best manners. With his flamboyant and provocating acting he tries to hide the fact that he is a coward deep in his heart and haunted by his various insecurities.
Despite his big mouth, Jean is a very poor fighter and afraid of anything that could hurt him. He even runs away from mice, and fences like a four-year old. At least he can shoot a little bit but most of the time he prefers to flee.
The tomcat is also gay and has defended his secret from anyone and anything. He also did a lot to get rid of those who seemed to know about it. By the time Blackspell had his trial, Jean raised his voice to get him from the Stormborn to replace the coyote with his red fox lover Nelson Nab as the paymaster, who was later killed by Benjamin Archer on Black Rock Island.
Jean often backstabs those who think of him as a friend: he flirted with Kajito and earned a beating, and as a vengeance for a slap he almost got Charles Wintermane to kill Billy Standish who courted the lion's daughter Louise. Trapped within lies and betrayal, Jean is distrusted and often pushed around - though Silver thinks of him as a very useful pirate.
The loss of Nelson changed him a little bit, and as Blackspell returns to the Stormborn crew he realizes the many mistakes he made. During the causes of the story Jean grows a nice set of bigger balls - but still he stays a coward and tries to get away from any trouble.
His sister Amélie is head of the organized crime in Fort-de-France on the Isle of Martinique. Currently he made his peace with Blackspell and Kajito (and outed himself as a gay), and also owes Dutchie Von Geest something for saving his life twice. His best pal since then is Finnegan "The Shagger" Keeley, who enjoys his good sense of humor. On the other hand, he tries to avoid the Wintermane sisters and Billy Standish, who still wants to kill him.
