Acrylic and clay, approx. 13.6" x 23.6" (x 2.6" max depth). Yes, the hand extending from the painting is fully three-dimensional. The hardest part was building up the forearm to create a smooth transition between painting and sculpture.
It began with the idea of the picture inviting you in. I didn't know at first what the world and life on the other side of the frame would be like, only that it had to be fantastically alien as well as appealing. I think mermaid space kangaroos were the right choice. You really have to be in the presence of this piece for the full impact. It's easy to imagine that you could take hold of her hand and be pulled into that other universe, where she and her friends would show you around all the brightest spots on their home arc and frolic weightlessly with you among the edge-trees.
