I did a trade with
royalty, art for a character design that I absolutely loooove but which she wasn't going to be using! Score!
So now I present the newest addition to my troupe of lady gryphon characters, Nepenthe. Yes, it's a she, she's flat-chested okay >:O Don't hate. I haven't fleshed out her personality much yet, just that she's going to be a little more quiet/pensive/clever than either Merygryph or Shiloh.
I want to hug her and bury my face in her neckfloof.
This is all I have time for right now, a few poses for reference. Maybe at some point I'll add notes and pawpad colors and boring stuff like that but this'll do the trick for now.
royalty drew the top left one sitting on the color bar, and I drew the pose references!
Btw fun fact, I had a hard time naming her. Nepenthe is actually a word (pronounced ni-PEN-thee) that means something, such as a drink or a drug, capable of making one forget suffering. I have a particular affinity for Poe's poems and he uses the word in the ever-popular Raven, “Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe, and forget this lost Lenore!” When I came across the word again it just seemed to fit. /tl;dr

In Greek mythology there were five rivers that ran through Hell: Styx, Cocytus, Acheron, Phlegethon, and Lethe.
Styx was the primary river, on which the gods themselves swore their oaths.
Lethe was the river of forgetfulness--drinking from its waters removed all memory of one's life before entering Hades.
Interestingly, in The Divine Comedy (Dante), the river Lethe isn't located in Hell, but in Purgatory.
Also, I really love this name for this character. It's not related to any of the rivers, but it's mentioned as "a drug to chase away sorrow" in Homer's Odyssey. It fits her beautifully; her design is almost hypnotic.
