Some time ago I was challenged by another artist to design a big spooky gothic style mansion. I rather suspect he wanted me to do it so he could copy from it, but the challenge intriqued me anyway. I love playing with archetecture and wanted to prove I could do this pretty much from a standing start, no preparation or perspecitve lines. Voila! Later I fleshed in the landscape a bit more, and added the tiny figures of Saara and Tangel' at the front gate. I think Saara's prudence won the day, and this Adamms Family monument didn't become the Offworlder's clubhouse.

Oh my gods... Do you have any idea how very MUCH I absolutely ADORE architecture?! Jesus Christ I could cream my pants over a design like that!
I want to EXPLORE IT O_O
I want to work out its floor plans,
survey the plot's grading and scale,
collect soil samples and conduct strata research
plot the boundaries of its foundation and footing
conduct structural analysis with a stress model
draft the framing and masonry patterns--
generate a bill of materials...!
*DEEP BREATH* EASY... eeeaasy boy...
...I haven't been trained to do all that o.o at most, draft according to the specifications of an experienced engineer and the inspiration of a seasoned architect... but boy oh boy would I love to be part of a project like THAT! Maybe Second Life or Activeworlds could use a house like that... i highly doubt anybody else would be able to build it with proportionate accuracy LET ALONE stock it adequately with furniture and adornment...
but it still makes me dream ^^

You might be interested, then, in Willow Run. When I began to create the world Willow Run, a town of around 10,000, in the late 80's, I designed a lot of houses in detail. Most were for specific people I knew. The plans were mostly rather rough, but I gradually spent more and more time on accuracy. I usually did a floor plan for every story, as well as views from one or more sides, and perhaps even from above. It was important also to show the location on a street map. I built up the whole county, in fact, and even began on a small city called Saylorsville (about 100,000) that was a few miles up the highway. At some point my intertest began to wane, and I haven't done any substantial wsork on Willow Run since, oh, the early 90's I guess.
Oh, and while I hadn't meant this particular mansion to belong in Willow Run, it would fit in just fine, along the shore of damned up Lake Potopowap, a stretch of scenery called The Gold Shore for the row of mansions that once housed wealthy families in the 1920's.
Damn. How much reference did you create before hand? Did you do a rough layout, and/or sketch out various faces of the structure before hand?
Not that if you say "Neither, I just improved it as I went", I will simultaniously hate and worship you. Would you be a benevolent deity, or a malevolent one?

It's a little hard to remember just how this came about. To some extent I "built" it in my mind -- the view and where the front door was and all. I also just let my hand make decisions as it went along. A tower here? The front door must go there, and there has to be an awning over it, and how about a bay window there. As it grew, I started to adjust new additions to discrete levels, or floors. When it was entirely laid out, it was time to add details. At this point there must have been some erasures and change. Finally I added the grounds and little touches like the gazebo and toollshed. But there was never any floor plan or any particular intention when I set out. Just make a big gothic pile.
Hmmm, maybe too big for your "Offworlder Club," but it would be perfect for Dimensional Beings Anonymous. It seems to occur far more often that a RIFT opens up and lets out a few confused creatures than it does for Aliens to land and make habitat. "Hi, my name is Akumeitakai and I am a creature from the RIFTS..." "Hi Aku!!!"
