If this is what you have, no worries. They're not going to hurt your tree, although they can have a nasty bite if provoked.

No need to be scared. :) If you leave them be, they won't bite. They'll just rid your garden of pests.

Y'know what's funny? I'm not scared of this guy at all... but if you added just two more legs so he looked like a spider, I'd be completely freaked out. I wonder if that means that a spider with only six legs wouldn't be so frightening.

I'm not sure what it is about spiders that gives people the willies and not insects.

Maybe it is the legs?

But, I've come across spiders that are missing limbs and still been freaked out.

When I was a kid I thought those bugs were dangerous. I guess it's the bright red color.

They can bite if you provoke them into doing so, but otherwise harmless.

That's a nice color contrast between the orange-red of the nymph and the green of the leaf. Speaking of the leaf, that's some incredible texture your camera managed to capture on it.

Used to have tons of these guys in my backyard growing up in Houston. They're surprisingly tolerant of members of their own species as far as predatory insects go. You'd see them clustered so densely they almost look like giant orange aphids.
