A small upload this time -- just four images.
The motive behind this was to create something like a classical children's book illustration. There is no background story though. What you see is all there is -- a girl bringing a tiny envelope to a squirrel living a rather human lifestyle in a tree.
But the old saying that "build a better mouse trap and the world will beat a path to your door" isn't strictly true. No childlren's book publishers or authors ever beat a path to mine.

The mistake in that old adage is the belief that costomer's search for what they want. Only in a seller's market. Kiddy lit is a buyer's market though. Writers and artists fall all over themselves to sell to the publishers, who don't have to lift a finger to have more than enough of either. Writers sometimes carry an artist along with them in their career, but their choices are understandably idiosyncratic. I don't know why, but there's a dominant vogue among writers for art that looks far too much like Ziggy. As it happens, I do know a handful of writers personally, but they're all SF and fantasy writers. SF and fantasy aren't published with illustration, just book covers. If I were a painter and lived where publishers have their offices, I might have a chance then, but I'm not a painter.

I'm sure this speaks poorly of me on some sort of deep, personal level, but my first thought is "Hey, that kid is looking up that squirrel dancer's dress!"

My first thought was that Skwerly was about to be ambushed by an ogre or a human or something similiarly dreadful ;) Really nice. Too bad children's books illos these days are usually worse than Ziggy, the idea being those dumb kids don't deserve any better (this from someone who as a kid read books illustrated by Ernest H. Shepherd and John Tenniel, among other anti-Ziggy artists).
