I think it might be one of those things like if you were to put food (carefully) infront of his mouth with one hand and were very slow about it, you could probably pet him a little, atleast while he's eating. Get your fingers out of there before he gets through all the food, though.
Fortunately, I think that the claws are more for burrowing than anything.
