So, cleaning out my garage today. Before I pick up anything, I always check it.
And there's a reason.
This is under the handle of my spare recycle bin. Where your fingers normally go, a Brown Widow had made a nest (Latrodectus geometricus).
This is the easiest way to get bit by a spider. Most Latrodectus bites occur under this scenario. That is to say, placing fingers where you can't see and pressing them against the spider.
Otherwise, these spiders are quite timid. Had I been bitten, it would have likely hurt like hell, but I'd have been fine. The bite for these guys isn't quite like their relatives.
She made a nice photo subject before I carefully removed her and chased her off.

Always wise to double check for spiders! My former workplace had brown widows that would reside in the decorative crevices on the building's exterior. It's a wonder none of the smokers ever got bit when they'd lean up against the building during a smoke break.
I'd much rather suffer a bite from a widow than a recluse, though...

That depends entirely on the spider and it's venom. Black widows hurt like hell, for instance. :3 It depends on whether the toxin is neurological or a muscle destroyer, the same goes for venomous species of snake. If it's the latter, the spider's bite bite will almost definitely hurt. ^_^
Oh, nice find! And cute picture, too. There's something charming about theridiids: I think the way their anterior median eyes catch the light always makes them look cartoonishly worried to me, like Wile E. Coyote holding up a tiny sign.

That's why durring the summer I always checked where I put my hands. With black widdows and rattlers it's always bet to be cautious. I actually picked up my dogs toy from the ground and there was a black widow on it. I squeezed the toy on the part she was on. It was cold outside though so her reaction time was slow. She is now in a tank in my room.
She's a cutie! Really great find, these little darlings are good at hiding.
Yes, most occasions I've been bitten or heard of people being bitten it's situations like this. Also a good idea to shake out bed spreads before you sleep under them... that's how I got bitten by some black widows. Fortunately, I've been bitten by so many different things, it hardly bothers me anymore.

It's an invasive species in the US. Some more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_widow
