And now I'm back to working on this piece. Sorry again for the photograph- the flash actually reflected quite badly off the acrylics here, and the colors are pretty off. I can't justify scanning the whole thing until it is complete, though, so this will have to do.
This is about 12 hours of painting. I also changed the Chinese on some of the signs - to hopefully be more accurate.
I decided not to add more characters to the scene - as I felt reluctant to cover up any more of the background - as the backgrounds are what I really love to paint the most =)...
I always start from the furthest away elements, and work forward... so that the atmosphere of color is created before the characters in it are... and also so the overlapping of paint is proper.
So, the colors are totally off from what they actually look like, and the flash is very distracting, but this is to document my progress. at least 8 more hours of painting will go into this tomorrow... we're not doing anything at all for Thanksgiving, apparently =P So I work.

There is a haze back there =). The flash is reflecting off it, making it brighter than it should be - but the buildings back there are faded - and the sky behind the archway is painted to look like a bright but overcast day.
I'm looking forward to getting this one done. =) I am enjoying working on it, but seeing a finished product is always something I look forward to.

Very nice, i enjoy it quite allot and am very impress by such a heavy chalange.
For taking photo's, i'd recommend not taking it with a flash and then, once in Photoshop, adjust the color Levels (well, thats what i do, don't know if it's the best way, but it's a option ^_^ )
Keep up the amazing work!

Wow, I can see inside one of the shop windows in the background! Amazing color and detail... ON A DISTANT BACKGROUND, NO LESS! Judging from this WIP and your past works, I know we'll see a fully-enthralling piece with festive colors and expressive characters. In fact, just a portion of this picture could be a submission all it's own, with no loss of detail.
I really appreciate that you upload the WIPs.
I also think it's interesting that you like to do the backgrounds. I HATE backgrounds. Maybe you see more in setting the scene than I do. ::Grins:: I try to make the characters tell a story, but I think it's so incomplete without a good background.
Your expressions are awesome! I've really loved them through your work.
The feet look a little unusual to me, consistantly.
I'd really love to see how you do your artwork through and through, with more in depth WIPs and things.
Just thought I'd drop a note.

Thank you for the thoughtful comment =)
There was a time which I hated doing backgrounds, too. I didn't really understand perspective at the time, and I couldn't see what I was doing wrong - but it didn't look right. Thats the worst - when you know something is wrong, but you don't know what - or how to fix it. This was also all at a time where I didn't have a group of people I could show my work to and get opinions on how to make it better, so it was really hard.
I guess at some point I decided to take the points of my work that I knew were really weak, and work really hard at improving them. I have always been impressed by professional artwork of scenery, such as landscape/cityscape paintings and backgrounds for feature film animation... but I never thought I could ever do work like that. I try to expect the impossible from myself, and then work my butt off to try to make it happen.
Thank you for the compliment on expressions =). Expressions are something that has come naturally for me, and something I have always enjoyed drawing =).
For anthros, I kindof draw a mix between a human foot, and a paw. I like the digitigrade stance, and the pawtoes/pads, but I also like the ratio of the lengths in human leg/foot anatomy. If I were to make them more feral, I would probably shorten the calf and elongate the foot... But as I'm showing a basically human society, more human anthros made sense.
I like posting WIPs - I will probably post another WIP tonight after I get done working for the day. Things like this painting take a long long time - and I'm a little worried about seeming spammy.

Wow, what a compliment =D.. Miyazaki is such an inspiration to me!
I am also looking forward to seeing how the finished piece comes out =). My mental image of how something will look, and how it ends up looking (through changing my mind or happy accidents) tend to be completely different.

Oh, yay =) Good.
I was worried I might make a small but crucial error that would turn what I intended a sign to say into something offensive ^.^,,
I speak/read a little Japanese, so I know how stroke order, etc. works, but I speak absolutely no Chinese. I had help ^.^
