Brigit's an Irish Setter, and is a fine daughter of the Old Sod indeed. In fact, she's a third-generation Fenian rebel, born and bred and taught at her parent's knees to hate the English. She got into enough trouble back home in the early to mid-1930s to put her in danger of being sent to the Magdalen.

The Magdalen was a sort of religious gulag run by the Catholic Church in Ireland, Canada, the United States and elsewhere. Young women would go into one, and never be seen or heard of again. The last one closed in 1996 after a public scandal ripped the veil of secrecy away from them in 1993.

Thankfully for Brigit, her aunt (with some assistance, possibly from certain furs) managed to scrape together enough money to send Brigit away to the Spontoon Islands in the North Pacific, and enroll her in the Songmark Aeronautical School for Young Ladies. Brigit's never failed to be grateful to her aunt for her gesture, and sends money back to Ireland when she can. She is still quite militantly Catholic, despite her brush with the Magdalen.
