Are they actually born with those spikes? Wouldn't that hurt the mommy?

The quills right now are very soft and tiny, they're not prickly at all.

Hedgehogs are born with tiny quills just below the surface of their skin, and they're also covered in a slimy membrane. It doesn't hurt the mother more than normal birthing pains. The quills start growing in within an hour or two of birth. Oh wow, that's pretty amazing :o. I've only seen those a few times in my life, but never the babies, so I was wondering how it worked. Thanks for telling me ^-^
