This is a mare I did a while ago. She's in primer here. New mane; new tail; completely rebuilt butt...

I buy on what is known as the "after market". A Breyer horse can sell for $50 over the counter new, whereas I can buy them used --or even broken, makes no difference to what I'm doing-- for as little as $5 plus shipping. And I tend to buy "lots", which is even cheaper. And the sculpting quality varies a good deal model to model. Their Classic Arab Stallion, which I've redone a couple of times, has a thick, clunky neck and a tail that looks like he stole it from a squirrel. Their Huckleberry Bey, however, is by Peter Stone and gorgeous.
Peter Stone puts out his own line of horses and they are both wildly popular and very expensive averaging around $150 each. I got one for $40 and another for $25, because they were damaged. I repaired them.
This is why, if someone approaches me looking to have a Breyer done, I ask them to look on Ebay to find the model they want, but not to buy. This kind of thing takes time and I'm a better shark than most when it comes to buying such things. I know where to find the best price.
AND I wanted to add the "flip tail", which required my removing the existing one. That tail was low and clinging to her butt, so when I cut it off, I took a portion of her actual butt and had to remake it.

aha, thanks for clarification. :)
very interesting. the plastic animal makers like Schleich, Bullyland and PAPO also have different sculptors with different quality. with PAPo one would have to look into the face to see if it's even, especially with long-muzzled animals.
I tend to buy used items for my model car collection, too. often a minted item is way too expensive for ym funds, or I simply don't want to spend that much; so a used one with paint chipped in places, is enough. sometimes I find perfect ones for small coin, too.
