An old photo of my rat, Thom. Sadly he passed away yesterday, and I feel like my heart is dead in the box with him. Because of his recent passing I thought it'd be appropriate to put up my favorite photo if him. I loved him so much, he was extremely sweet and his death was so sudden and unexpected,

Because of their short lives I've been basically mentally preparing myself for their death since they were a year old (as terrible as that is.) It's like the moment they are born receiving the "your family member has two years to live" sentence from a doctor, yet in such a short time they are so sweet and you get so attached to them.
The average lifespan, though projected wildly different from different sources, is at the shortest I've seen projected to be 1.8 months - 2 years. Thom was 1.7 months and I always credited myself for trying to take really good care of them so his sudden and rapid decline from acting entirely normal to death's door within a couple days was what made it such a shock and so difficult to deal with. I feel the worst about it just fearing there was something in my care that wasn't good enough and led to his "early" death. If his death had come a few months from now I probably would have been more ready for it.
But that's just me going off on a tangent sorry ^^;

Well, it doesn't have to have anything to do with your care. I mean, estimated lifespans are just that, very estimated. I mean, look at humans... We can die anywhere from the day we're born till well after we're 100 years old. Animals are similar. Any genetic predisposition could have been the cause of it. Life spans are just suggestions of when they might pass on. Some will pass on earlier, some later.
