If you do an abstract background, try for a merging of water and fire. If you want something a little more concrete, a good mountain range with maybe an erupting volcano near the ocean would be a cool mix too.

Definitely more finished. The detail effect on the red neck is pretty cool and the colors are nice. Wonder if you could do a more translucent effect for the skin between the wings, since that skin has to be thin...

I'd second an erupting volcano near the ocean for a good background. Maybe as lava pours off a short cliff and hits the water, this guy could be sitting on a large rock near that as large waves crash around the rock, with a bit of spray upward.
